Ive played a private server before. Most of them usually have high ping though. Cant blame them since it is free . You do need WoW to play the private servers ofcourse by either download or buy. (Mostly download now because u can get trials which downloads the game off Blizzard)

You don't have that if you only going to play on Private server

Trials are free to download or you can pick them up at checkout of most game stores for $4 and you get i think 2 days or 2 weeks free. If there's anything I'm willing to pay to play for it's probably Wndows/Xbox Live Gold. and Final Fantasy XI Online. :P
