    Default Worst PC luck ever

    The most frustrating Saturday ever

I was updating Windows and my PC froze for reasons unknown. Had to do a hard restart, went past POST then it said "unable to find a boot device" Restarted a couple times, same message. Frustrated thinking my HD blew up, decided I'd go ahead and clean out all the dust from the fans and heat sinks. Decided to plug it back in and give it another try after I was done. Started up fine, got to the desktop, turned off with no error messages or anything. Tried to get to event viewer after the 5th time of it restarting before I got there. about 50 NTFS errors, so naturally I reformat and run a program that blocks off bad sectors. Install windows without issues, running windows update, boom PC shuts off no error messages.

Thinking it's over heating checked the temps with HWiNfo and speedfan, CPU running at 70 Celsius on idle. Reset the heatsink with new thermal paste, made sure it was snug, started up PC same thing. In anger, I took the heatsink off the CPU again, when I did, the little plastic piece that snaps into the board broke off. Order a Cool Master Hyper 212 Evo, cry my self to sleep because I missed raid night on WoW and spent 4-5 hours messing with the piece of junk.

Most unfortunate number of events I've ever had with a PC. Nothing was wrong until Windows Update crashed my PC. If that haven't happened, I wouldn't of had any issues. New heatsink came today, spent 2 hours getting the thing on and back into my PC. Had to take the whole Mobo out of the case because the heatsink screws onto the back of it. CPU idles at 30 Celsius now, 45 while running at 100 percent. Very good heatsink could run my CPU at max while overclocked, doubt it'd get over 50.

That sounds like a headache. Glad you were able to figure it out. That heatsink/fan looks cool, I have a similar one, also cooler master, but several years older.

My PC too was overheating a few weeks ago, CPU idling at 60-70 degrees. When I opened my case to clean it, I noticed the case fan in the back malfunctioned. Before, it was taking all the hot air blown out by the CPU fan and throwing it outwards, but somehow, it was rotating extremely slowly and acted as a blocker and all the heat was trapped.

When I replaced the fan (and cleaned the rest of my PC), the thing idles at around 25 degrees and gets to maybe 50 degrees when I'm really using it. My PC is almost 3 years old, I was thinking about building another one this summer to replace (and turn this one into another server at home) but I think I'm gonna hold off another year and build it specifically for Win10. This thing has been great to me so far. Issues here and there, like my old hard drive dying, but I had enough warning to create an image and move everything over to a new drive.

That thing in the picture that reads G1-Killer (heatsink?) looks like a rifle magazine. It's a sweet motherboard as a whole, I love Gigabyte.

At least you had an easy fix, always scary when something stats going wrong with your PC. Crazy 1 down case fan caused it to heat up that much.

Mines about 3 years old as well, am also holding off for Windows 10. Gives me time to save up for new parts, I want to get a full size case as well, this mid is pushing it since GPU's are so huge now days. I don't even have 3.0 USB ports and my PCIE x16 slot is only a 2.0.

I'm curious what you have in your PC, probably blows mine out of the water lol.

Also, that's not actually my mobo, though it does look pretty cool. I just posted it to show the scale of how huge the heatsink was. I was going to take pictures of the process to post on Reddit, but it was so frustrating to attach I didn't want to deal with it.

I took 1 pic during the process.

I'm a biostar guy my self

That's a huge fan! After looking at that, I checked mine and I have a Zalman, not cooler master. I was confusing it with a computer I built recently.

I don't have anything special, I built this when I first started working, so I had a limited budget. So I tried to build the best thing I could off that.

    I have:

    - GIGABYTE GA-970A-UD3 Mobo - also PCI-E 2.0 slots
    - AMD FX-4100 Zambezi Quad Core CPU 3.6ghz (bulldozer)
    - 2x 4gb Corsair RAM + 2x 4gb G.Skill RAM - 16gb total DDR3 - 1 G.Skill actually died, but it was covered and they replaced it
    - AMD Radeon HD 6850 GPU GDDR5 (again, nothing special, I do everything on medium or low graphics anyway) - can't run triple monitor for some reason but it could be my third monitor's fault
    - 4 Hard drives - 2x1tb, 2tb, and 500gb. Plus I have a Win2012 server running with an additional 2 hard drives, a 3tb and a 1tb which I use for additional storage and remote backups for everyone in my house.
    - 5 case fans (2 failed which I replaced) - they all glow either red or blue.
    - Antec 300 Illusion ATX Mid Tower - the front comes out completely and has a mesh cover which I can wash (and I do wash it)
    - Zalman Performa 92mm CPU Fan - it blows out air right into a case fan which vents it out
    - OCZ Fatality 750W PSU - Semi-Modular (helps save so much space)

This configuration isn't blowing anyone out of the water. It's very minimal if you think about it, but it works. I have 50+ tabs open in Chrome (in 2-3 windows) and with a lot of other programs (Spotify, Brackets, Outlook, XAMPP, etc.) and I can play League of Legends (or any other game) without any lag. I clean everything once every few months, otherwise my computer is on 24/7. Current uptime is 12 days (last time I cleaned because my fan failed and CPU was overheating). Before that, the uptime was almost 6 months.

That's about it. I don't game as much as I used to when I was younger, it's probably why my computer is in good condition. Ten years ago, I probably would have killed it within 2 years. I'm aiming for my next build maybe around April or May of 2016 (big maybe), and this time, now that I have a decent job, I can put a good amount of money into it and build something really nice.

    Nerd dreams.

Your PC is about as good as mine honestly. I hate that AMD Mobo's only have 2.0 PCIE slots. Have been thinking about making the jump from intel to amd CPU, but it's holding me back. especially since I'm about to pick up two Evga Titans for 200 dollars a piece. Have been talking to a guy on reddit who just bought two Titan X's and he's going to give me his old regular titans for cheap. Just waiting on him to make a Pay Pal invoice. Will definitely have to get a new mobo to support those things.

    I'm running:

Mobo: Biostar TH55b HD, one deal RAM slot
    Memory: 2x 4GB geil
GPU: Nvidia EVGA 560ti 850Mhz core clocked, recently over clocked to 975. runs a little hot now.
CPU: i5 750 2.7Ghz, but recently overclocked to 3.1Ghz since I'm replacing soon and the new heat sink does wonders
Case: Antec 900-2, very nice case, Antec makes the best imo. Wishing I went a full size instead of mid though.
    HD: 1tb Seagate 7200RPM I think
PSU: 650 watt Rosewill, Reviews have been saying it dies in about 16 months. I've now owned mine for 15 months. Hype train

I understand though, I can't wait for the day to come when I can blow 2 or 3 grands on a kiler PC. Though with this deal I'm getting for the Titan's I just need to dish out 4 or 5 hundred for a mobo and CPU and I'll be pretty happy with my build. Maybe a few extra sticks of RAM.

Sounds like you have a plan. I hope that goes well.

I've never built an intel machine for myself (I've built plenty for others). AMD has been good to me, 80% chance my next build will be AMD too. Maybe a successor to this thing: AMD Processor FX-8350 Black Edition Vishera 8-Core 4.0GHz 125W D8350FRHKBOX - Newegg.com

I also want to do liquid cooling of some sort. So far, I've only done a liquid cooling set for one person, and he spent a lot of money on the thing. I had a big liquid cooling CPU unit for my old computer (AM2 mobo only), but I screwed up and broke a piece of the mounting bracket. I also tried to install it 6 months after I purchased it, so no way to return it either. I still have it around here, but it's just a big paperweight now.

Liquid cooling could be something to take into consideration for your next build too. Especially if you go for a full tower, you'll have plenty of space. And there are some nice kits out there and they're not as expensive as they used to be (e.g. CORSAIR Hydro Series H105 Extreme Performance 240mm Liquid CPU Cooler, CW-9060016-WW - Newegg.com)

Or maybe this Mineral oil setup:

Actually was just deciding today if I should get a FX 8350 or go Intel. I'd like to do an AMD build, but the more I read the more I run back to intel, I'm sure half of it is bias, but you don't hear many bad things about intel except the price.'

That is a very neat set up, Would be cool to have, thing would never get hot lol.

The Titans didn't come through, guy stopped responding, guess he changed his mind, but gaming must go on so I bought this today.

    GPU: R9 280X 3GB 384-Bit
    CPU: Intel Core i5-4690K
    Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-G1.Sniper Z97
    PSU: EVGA SuperNOVA 750W
Then picked up 2 more stick of 4 GB Memory giving me a total of 16GB now.

Decided to go intel again, because I'm mostly on WoW and it's pretty CPU intensive. From what I read most people had to OC the FX 8350 to 4.5+ Ghz to get 60+ FPS when there in big raid groups. Always OCD about overclocking unless it's an outdated part, so hopefuly the i5-4690k has enough juice.
