Games as tools in education

Hi.

Was just wondering if any games could be used as tools in teaching at any level/ type of school. Which games? Why/why not and how?

Games have the potenial to be educational, but it would most likely work the best at grades one through five, maybe in middle school, reason being it givens gratification when you do something right. They did it with my class in 5th grade we would get on the computers every friday and learn very basic math and what not and when you got questions right screen lite up and it was cool back then.

After 8th grade, max maybe even less, games as an educational tool drops and no one will want to use games for such reasons they would rather play it for violence and what not have some real fun.

Welcome I have never thought about this but most of the games I play would not be suitable for teaching as they are mainly rpg and fps
So I have no ideas hehe
Would be intresting to see what the others come up with though see you about

When I was little, I would play these PC games and they were called Jumpstart
and they went all the way up to 6th grade
and they were educational
like Jumpstart 2nd grade you are in this classroom and you can collect stamps by playing certain games and it was pretty entertaining and you learned fractions, and states and it was really entertaining
and then there was Jumpstart 3rd grade where this evil girl named Polly took all of these nice robots and put them back in time to change history so she could ace her history test so you have to play these games to get these items to put in the time machine to get the robot so history isn't changed
you learn a ton of history and you learn about locations in the world like the ocean, or the savannah and fractions and about art
those were really fun games!

I believe MIT (I think it's MIT) has a class that actually teaches strategy in StarCraft. If that's kind of what you are talking about...

There are tons of educational games for young kids in school, but as you get older the list seems to disappear haha.

I remember reading once that the Age of Empires and Company of Heroes games created a lot of general interest in the subject of history. To me games can be used, but like most things they shouldn't be considered to be the ball all and end all in the quest for knowledge.

Exactly like Jango said, I was 1 of 4 people from my grade who took AP history and did pretty well. And I think it's because I love playing games like Rome: Total War, Age of Empires etc.

Strategy- Make the brain work in a survival mode
FPS- Improves the brain reaction ability
MMOPG or RPG- Increase the brain reaction with people and certain things. Also, work the brain on making money and saving money.
