Alright, I bought a 8800gt for xmas if anyone remembers my thread around that time about it. Ended up not working, I checked all the specs on my motherboard, power supply and everything else. All the specs seemed to match from what I could tell. So I sent it back, blaming it on a defected card. One thing I should of done was mess with the chip set, but I was defiantly to lazy to at the time and blamed it on the card instead. So, I'm about to buy a "GeForce 9800 GT XXX" No idea what the "XXX" is, but this card has a higher core clock than the regular 9800 GT. So, before I buy it, I'm going to make sure that my computer is capable of running it.

So...

Here's the card: Newegg.com - XFX PVT98GYDDF GeForce 9800 GT XXX 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Desktop Graphics / Video Cards (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150331)

My motherboard that I have doesn't seem to exists, got it from new egg awhile ago. Maybe 6 months. The system model is P4M90-M7A. I have yet to find it on BioStars website.

Anyway, the important specs for my motherboard are:
Chipset: IGP ( I think it's changable to a VGA though )
2 PCI
1 PCI-E x16
DDR 2 ram, 667 I think the max speed is, I forget. Don't think it matters though. I have 2 gigs of DDR2 though.
uhh, anything else matteR?
CPU is a 3.4 dual core.
650 watt power supply.

My motherboard obviously doesn't have SLI unless it's built in on the card. But I'm only using 1 card anyway and my power supply is big enough for a SLI also.

One thing that I'm unsure about is that the card says PCI-E 2.0 X16, does it only support 2.0 or is it like USB ports where it downgrades?

If anything else is needed let me know.

the slot has to match, PCI-E X16 and PCI-E 2.0 x16 are two different...and one wouldn't work with the other and I don't think one would even fit into the other's slot.

the XXX means that it is overclocked already so don't try to overclock it anymore - i have 8600GT XXX

are you getting the card replaced?

looking at your mobo specs, you don't have a 2.0 x16 slot..that's probably why it didn't work

I'm feeling a little slow, mentally, so I don't know if I missed a question or something lol

That's was the question, but I've heard from others that it doesn't have to be a 2.0, just has to be X16. They fit in the same slot, because I had it in my motherboard. I was thinking that it was just like the 2.0 USB slots. If you put a flash drive or something that's capable of 2.0 into a regular USB slot (1.0) it still works, just doesn't run as fast. Will probably have to buy a new mothboard then, doubt they make that kind of adapter.

Edit: Also just remembered. On the box of the 8800GT that I have returned. It just said for requirements. PCI-E X16 slot. Didn't say it had to be a 2.0. I'm pretty sure that the 8800Gt said PCIE 2.0 X16 also.

most new GPUs and Mobos come with 2.0 x16 slots. I never really got a card that was off for a motherboard...usually when I spec parts for a new pc, i just match everything to make sure I get optimal output, so I can't say that I have experience using a 2.0 x16 card on a regular x16 slot.

but are you getting your card replaced? If you are and the new one works, then you know it was defective, if it doesn't then my assumption could be right

I'll let you know tomorrow or something lol, my brain is kinda fried. Friend came over today and we played L4D and I did some mind numbing work afterwords.

Yea, I'm going to get the card posted above I guess. I just looked it up on Wiki and got this

"PCIe 2.0 is backward and forward compatible with PCIe v1.x. PCI Express 2.0 has good backwards compatibility, new PCIe 2.0 graphics cards are compatible with PCIe 1.1 motherboards, meaning that they will run on them using the available bandwidth of PCI Express 1.1. Overall, graphic cards or motherboards designed for v2.0 will be able to work with the other being v1.1 or v1.0."

I think it has to do with the chip set. If it doesn't work this time, I'll mess around with the chip sets. It says that some Mobo's have locked chip sets so it won't let you use a 2.0 in a 1.0 slot. I'll find out if mines like that and if it is, see if someone cracked it or something.

ah makes sense then - usually XFX makes great GPU's, never had a problem with their cards and I prefer XFX over other companies. let me know how things go once you get it back.

I had 2 different RAMs fail on me from newegg - first one was when I was building my server - one of the ram cards was defective - second one was when I got new RAM for my old old old laptop cuz the other one fried - failed...

Just happy that newegg isn't to harsh about taking returns for refunds or exchanges. and they pay shipping back and forth for returns :D
