SEATTLE (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp announced plans on Thursday to open its own chain of stores and hired a DreamWorks Animation executive to run them.

The move follows rival Apple Inc's successful foray into retailing, but comes at a time when consumer spending is under pressure due to the recession.

The company did not say how many stores it was looking to open, or when, or which products would be available.

That is to be decided by David Porter, a former DreamWorks executive, which Microsoft named as its new vice president of retail stores on Thursday.

They should have waited till we were exiting the recession not when we were still heading to the bottom, although by the time the stores get built and open we very well may be exiting it.

I raged. Does Microsoft have to try to monopolize everything?

monopolize what? It's not like this is going to send any stores into bankruptcy. Really just cutting out the middle man to make more money and they are business after all and more money is always good

All stores that sell Microsoft games will suddenly become useless since they can eliminate the middleman and lower prices. Since Xbox and Windows are in the lead for Gaming, you can get all your games at a fraction of the price. Hence, other stores are dead until Nintendo blows Xbox out of the water. (Realize I'm going by US statistics.)

I really doubt they would this and even if they do Sony/Nintendo are more than enough for stores to have a video game section. Also Sony's store has been open for awhile and they have never done this or even hinted at, as Nintendo has already blown 360 out of the water in units and profit

I see no problem with this. It might be an odd time to open them, but considering it'll take awhile to open, they might end up making some good profit at the end of a dark tunnel.

I'm interested to see what the store will be like. <:
