NEW YORK - Movie rental company Blockbuster Inc. said Monday the risk that it may not complete financing deals raises “substantial doubt” about its ability to continue as a going concern.

Dallas-based Blockbuster, which has struggled amid the rising popularity of DVD-by-mail services like Netflix, disclosed the warning in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. The company had already cautioned last month that its auditor was likely to raise doubts about its ability to stay in business.

A going-concern qualification refers to an auditor’s assessment of a company’s ability to continue to operate for the foreseeable future.

Last week, Blockbuster said its revolving and term loan agreement was amended, giving it a $250 million revolving loan refinancing that matures on Sept. 30, 2010. Lenders including JPMorgan also agreed to waive any default that could result if auditors attached a “going concern” classification.

But on Monday, the company said its lenders’ obligation to fund the $250 million credit facility is subject to meeting certain conditions, and there can be no assurances that these conditions will be met.

Even if the loan is funded, the company said it “may not have sufficient liquidity to finance the ongoing obligations of our business, which raises substantial doubt about our ability to continue as a going concern.”

Blockbuster said it believes that it will be in a position to close the amended credit facility by around May 11, though “there can be no assurance regarding these matters.”

Shares fell 3 cents to 85 cents in after-hours trading, having closed earlier at 88 cents.

Mixed emotions about this one, b.b. has provided so much entertainment for me but then they screwed me so many times on late fees....then again....who's fault is that. Heh.

netflix doesn't he have late fees...switch to them, save money double over. I figured for myself if I used full use of a 8 at a time plan I could 32-40 dvds a month at a rate of 1.46-1.17 per dvd, if I went to a conventual(sp?) dvd rental store that cost much much more

Finally. This company is such a rip off. You no how they say no late fees. Well some how, I owe $49 on a game. It was only about a week or two over due. The games not even worth $49.

Yeah b.b. got sued for that "no late fees" scam for false advie. It's all about the fine print kiddos.

Haha, WOW, how did this happen? All we have here are Blockbusters. We used to have some Rogers Video stores here and there but Blockbuster was too popular and almost all the Rogers stores closed down.

This is a surprise. Then again, Blockbuster raised it's prices a while ago to ridiculous rates.

I boycott RedBox / McDonalds and ... I don't exactly need NetFlix.
I run my own video store... Lol.

You actually own a video store? or do you work at one and get free rentals? not tracking...or do you just buy a lot and own so many you consider your collection as a video store

Lolol, Nice. Usually when parents discover - they mug all the old movies they missed. ;)
I've nabbed ... over 500, but I junked a bunch. Filled 300 of 500 gb. Full Series - Borne, Potter, Mad Max, Indiana Jones, Matrix, Underworld. My ... store has a ridiculous amount in stock. ;)

I always saw the end of Blockbuster coming to a head. I mean, nowadays you can rent movies from online from places like Netflix. Why drive down to a store, rent a movie/game, watch/play it, then drive back down and realize it's late and having to be charged?

It is unfortunate for the employees of Blockbusters around, but the economy is bad. Even large companies like General Motors are hurting. Expect to see a lot of businesses going "Out of Business." Welcome to a recession.

This month I've acquired close to 200 movies to add to my.... movie rental service for friends and family. A friend of mine has an external TB full of movies... not a single television show on that thing... he's my idol. His collection rivals Netflix imo.
