Disney to Acquire 30% Hulu Stake, Full ABC Shows on the Way: Report
By John C Abell April 30, 2009 | 11:22 am | Categories: Miscellaneous
Disney has reached a deal with Hulu to buy a nearly 30 percent stake in the red-hot video service and put full episodes of ABC shows on the site, the Wall Street Journal is reporting (subscription).

Under the terms of the arrangement, Disney would pump “a similar amount” of capital and marketing funds as NBC and News Corp., which started the venture in March last year with an initial investment of about $100 million, the WSJ reported, citing people familiar with the matter.

A U.S.-only service, Hulu last month surpassed Yahoo as the No. 3 video service on the web, after Google/YouTube and Fox Interactive, serving up 380 million videos. Its collection includes thousands of videos, full episodes of new and classic TV shows and full-length movies, web originals and clips.

Hulu is exploding so fast...wowza, now #3 :headspins:

wow...they are growing fast...too fast - hope they don't explode cuz if they start to use to use up as much bandwidth as youtube, they will face dangers of shutting down - they don't have a company big enough behind them to keep them up like google

I've heard about Hulu and their take over on YouTube soil, however I've not once been to the Hulu site or needed to look for television or movies, whatever they do - online.

NBC Universal/Disney/Fox are big enough+ Providence Equity Partners gave 100 million to a site on a hunch in the beginning so I don't think there will be problems

They own Miramax (which makes me feel only marginally better).

Read this book (http://books.google.com/books?id=-9B1B9zqXNEC&printsec=frontcover&dq=mouse+betrayed&ei=AP76SeHHJJGuzQTRmtTEAw) whenever you get the chance. It's dated, but it really makes me skeptical about anything financial that Disney touches.

For example (and this is straight from that book) this woman dies from jetskiing (if I'm remembering this right). They tie her body to a bouy in the middle of the lake to keep the Orange Country fire and rescue from upsetting any of the other guests. They basically leave her out there until after closing time when they then come and collect her corpse.

Disney is big enough to keep Orange County police off its property, which means that they address crimes that happen there by saying that it's private property and they can handle it. (That spoof of Disney on the Venture Brothers is at least partially on point.) But mostly they hush it up so that nothing can tarnish the image of the Happiest Place on Earth.

Disney gives me the heebeejeebums.

yea but they aren't as big as google, they never will be (revenue wise)

and Disney is cheap...they don't pay their staff as much as other networks - so if they bail out after a while to avoid losses, I wouldn't be surprised.

Disney is a machine.
Like the borg, except it pumps out rock stars.

J. Timberlake.
Britney Spears.
Christina Aguliara.
Hannah Montana.
The Jonas Brothers.
HighSchool Musical - until that stupid teen went nudie on the intarweb.

All of these work horses have pumped MILLIONS out, now.
All because of Disney.

I personally hate it.
But if you get the chance to goto DisneyWorld --

And a mom yells at you for not letting her little son on the Tea Cup.
;) Let him on.

He'll puke when you're done spinning him so fast, snot and tears are running down his spun little face.:laugh::laugh::laugh::twitcy:

there. told you what I think of each - only one gets my vote - and notice that they got all of their stars as kids - so they can pay them less

My professor's husband works with CBS Sports - He was offered a Job at ESPN as one of the directors of something (owned by disney) - His paycheck would have come down like 20% if he decided to go lol.

and look what happened to George of the Jungle 2 lol - No Brendan Fraser - they even said Disney was too cheap to hire him in the movie

Hopefully hulu does well - I've watched plenty of episodes on there of shows I like - definitely don't want to see them fail.

They just put up 100 million on a web site, I don't think it'll be easy to get them off this.
