HOLLYWOOD - -- " G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" is the last of Hollywood's big summer popcorn movies.

But you wouldn't know it from the way Paramount Pictures launched its nearly $180 million big-screen adaptation of the classic military action figures, comic books and TV cartoon series.



So here I am do a little polling, What's the talk amongst your friends about this movie? I am just wondering what kind of hype surrounds this as this seems to be a candidate for flopza. 180 million! Hollywood truly has gone off the deep end these last couple years and I trim the fat and curb these enormous budgets. If they don't summer movies will have 500+ million budgets regularly and we'll be paying 25 bucks a ticket.

My friends think it looks utter bull****. We figure it's gonna be an explosion sandwhich with extra mindless violence, terrible cliches, under-dressed women, annoying accents (though that may only be noticable over here) and ridiculous lines. Complete with a plot as a sharp as a plastic bendy spoon.

Definately will not being seeing it in the cinema. May get on dvd to watch (and laugh at) at home.

It's gonna be just as bad as Speed Racer. A classic cartoon from two generations before me transforming into a live action movie... With plenty of witty one liners and a snake eyes that will probably use a broad sword because it's more american.

Better than expected, at least -- so that's good.

Back story was well laid out for most of the characters.
Liking the characters was awesome.
Villains were cool.
Not a whole-lot of senseless combat and explosions.
Sweet special effects.
Hot chicks.
Cool guns & suits.

Meh. I didn't think it was half-bad. A little corny at times.
I also enjoyed Speed Racer though. ;)
The Wachoski Brothers are inventive and creative - usually come up with awesome stuff -- side note.

It did 56.2 million this weekend. Speaking of Speed Racer, GI Joe kick it's arse in opening weekend numbers. 18.5 opening for it. Well here's to hoping District 9 does well this upcoming weekend. hell it'll probably make it's budget back this weekend, only 30 million.

While I haven't seen it personally I have heard the following:

1) Cheesy one-liners
2) See-through plot (think bad boys 2 where they're told they can't go to Cuba... and then they still go)
3) Unbelievable acting. (not in the good way)

I personally wasn't interested in this anyways, and my friend and I normally have the same taste in movies so I'll be waiting for this to show up on HBO or borrow it from an uneducated friend who ends up buying it on DVD/BD

My family is thinking of going, I think I'm just going to ask them to buy me a District 9 ticket as I'd rather watch that instead. I let them drag me to Race to Witch Mountain..not again. I'll see G.I Joe, just rather see something that I think will be good to great like District 9 before something I think will be a nice popcorn flick that falls into the average category.

I saw it. it had cool effects, Corny at times, I like how they brought out Cobra.
Fights are good. 3/5 7/10
