View Full Version : How much RAM is your firefox using?

I was wondering how much memory firefox was using for you firefox users?
I ask this because in the past few months, I found firefox to hog a lot of memory. I have 4 gigs in this computer but at any one point firefox can use up 1.8gb of RAM. Although in task manager it shows you the pagefile usage and in total you get about 50% more ram there.
Right now it's using about 1.4gb - what's your using? (specifically for firefox users)
And my computer and browser have been on since October 3rd (that's when I last cleaned up the hardware).

Good God, man. That's WAY TOO MUCH!
My Firefox Private Processes are running at 144k.

firefox began to hate me when I started using google chrome as a test browser - if I leave firefox on for too long, the ram usage gets pretty big
I restarted firefox earlier today, and right now it's using about 400megs. Still a lot compared to everything else I'm running but I have enough power to handle it. I usually have like a dozen tabs open so that doesn't help.

I've got about 159k.
Though I close and reopen my browser at least once a day.

I'm thinking of switching to Chrome to be my default browser now because firefox easily gets up to 1gb of ram usage after a few days where it starts to slow down (noticeable when watching videos or playing flash games) - don't know why it's happening.
Last browser restart was on the 19th as recorded in the previous post. Will do it again tomorrow just to refresh the ram. Might also reinstall firefox and see if that helps.

Mine runs at 1 gig when I first open it. I have a few addon's running though. This is probably why my Firefox crashes a lot, because I only have 2 gigs of ram. hmmm = / I couldn't switch browsers, I'm way to use to Firefox

the only addon i have is the Google Toolbar - and yeah...using up that much ram would force certain programs to crash.

I remember seeing a test that said firefox actually used more
wish I could find it
EDIT: It was only the newest version

Looking at my processes...
firefox.exe 80,184 K
though even in the time it took to post this, it fluctuates up and down by several thousand K's

i haven't restarted my firefox since the 19th or so (even though I said I would, I didn't) but it's at 800k+ right now. Ram is a little lower but I wish it was around 80mb like Yuri's.
And my total ram usage is about 2.5GB. I gotta restart some programs to refresh the ram. My firefox and opera has been on for weeks. (Opera has been on since my last restart more than a month ago)

I think in comparison with opera firefox indeed taking more RAM. And i have 1GB of RAM and i'm using firefox on it just cause of some extensions.

Opera and Google Chrome Seems to be far more efficient when it comes to using RAM. I can have just as many tabs open on either and they wouldn't use as much RAM as Firefox even when you combine them.
And I don't run any addons or plugins with any browsers. Just a google toolbar and chrome comes with it preinstalled.

Right now I'm only using firefox... and its around 94,064 K...
is that too much?
LiNuX

94,000 is pretty low. I'm at 500,000+ and I restarted my browser yesterday (but I have like 10 tabs open)
Kenoi

so then its most definitely not recommended to have more than 10 tabs open?
LiNuX

Didn't say that...I'm just telling you how my browser is acting. I could have 20 tabs open or 5 tabs open, if the ram is at 1gb usage, it'll stay there for a while. Right now I have 8 tabs open but ram usage is 700,000+ which is more than the 10 tabs.
Can't really explain why firefox has become so inefficient. It used to be great. Used to use around 100-150mb ram just like Opera does now. The newer versions of Firefox probably has something that rides up the ram.

I would think that people make tweaks to firefox, more flashy ads, or maybe something to deal with flash players.

I haven't used it in a while but it's under 100mb if I remember correctly. Used to use it a lot before.

I just reinstalled Firefox, so much faster now, I just backed up my book marks and then deleted the whole folder. It runs at 60,000 KB with no plug-ins enabled, a theme and the framework. Still a lot for a browser IMO, but It loads up pages 3 times as fast as it use to lol.

I've done that once, didn't fix my issue. It's almost at 800mb right now but I have like 15 tabs open, and no plugins. The only thing I have is the google toolbar.
But the browser has never been slow for me. loads pages just as quick as before. It's just the RAM usage that bugs me.

Mine must of been slow because I don't have to much ram and it was using nearly half before.
I reinstalled it because it kept crashing, but it didn't fix the problem. I guess I'll have to deal with it and hope firefox fixes it, because I don't want to switch browsers.

How much ram do you have?
And I never had issues with FF crashing. And if you do end up switching browsers, try out Chrome. Very good browser, it's my default browser on both my laptops. I just have so much stuff saved in FF on this PC, I don't feel like switching.

I have about 2 gigs of 667.
I have Chrome downloaded just to try it out, I like it, but I'm just so use to firefox I don't want to switch lol. It's not crashing as much as it was before, plus I just have to restore the page and it goes right back to where it was.

Yeah, I also like the restore feature. Saves me a few seconds. Not sure if Chrome has that too...have to check.
I know Opera has it.

Chrome has that feature. when browser crashes it saves earlier session and shows them in the tab later as it is. So yes, there is feature for chrome as well.

Haven't had the time to turn on my laptop try but is it only when it crashes? Both FF and Opera allows you to save when you're exiting. And saves when crashes by default.

Well for me there is no power backup here and sometimes there is power outage so whole system gets exit that way. And when i power-on the system and click on browser then i have seen the session message and tabs restored. Yes, FF has that feature as "restore session".

I'm all about chrome, for either OS (now that they finally got out an official release for us Mac users!)
I'm boot into Leopard right now (OS X 10.5) and with eight tabs open (all of them of GF threads) chrome was using about 240MB of RAM. For good measure and to test it, I threw open Gmail, Facebook, and Twitter in another window and opened tabs for a bunch of Facebook notifications and now have eight facebook pages open AND the still have this GF window open. Now Chromes is using about 420MB of RAM.
I usually get better results in Windows, I feel like they developed chrome better over there, although I'm thoroughly pleased with the mac version as well :) It's all about that totally streamlined minimal interface, baby

They have Chrome for Linux too now I believe. I have to try it out. I've been using Firefox on all my linux systems.
