System Empires is a free strategy game that can be played on any computer with internet access.
On the 18th of October started a new edition, SE CIV 1.0 and to promote a higher participation of everyone, some prizes will be given to randomly selected players.
This Portuguese project started February 2006 and since then, several editions have elapsed, from which we feature the long duration edition (still running) that started September 2007. Over the last 3 years, the game has been developed taking into account suggestions given by players on the board, resulting in the currently released version 1.0 with all the features we feel are more relevant.
The goal of the game is supremacy over the Solar System, where each player can colonize several regions spread across 8 different planets. In their colonies, they can build resource producing buildings, develop technologies in their laboratories, build ships and weaponry.
While evolving, a player can attack or may need to defend its regions from other players. A player also has the possibility of joining a group (Alliances) so there can be more interaction and protection. As an empire grows, the need to select which specialty best suits the player, i.e., which civilization best suits the player's strategy also grows. This has to take into account the main focus of each civilization: Miners - production and defense; Merchant - business with the Market Entity; Scientist - technology development; or Warrior - attacking.
One of the strong points of the game is the Market Entity, a virtual entity that allows players to trade a certain resource (eg: diamonds) for another (eg: hydrogen). Buy and Sell prices on the Market are set according to how sought a resource is, i.e., if a lot of diamond is sold to the Market, diamond's price will drop. Additionally, each planet has its own Market, unrelated to the others, and with its own prices. This offers the possibility of a merchant strategy - buy and sell on Markets of different planets.
Alliances provide several features to the players that belong to them, such as Joint Attack and Defense where several players from the same alliance can attack in a single joint strike a region of another player, or converge in a joint defense on a region that belongs to one of them. We also feature the Allied Cooperation System, where several players can help another recovering from a strike, and the Assisted Collects where several players collect wrecks from a combat and coherently divide them through all involved players.
In this edition there will also be a customizable ship: the Mother Ship. This ship, unlike others, is built as the player sees fit. I.e. the ship is constructed using unit modules such as Engines, Weapons, Shields, Cargo Holds, and others. The player will choose what modules to construct. In addition to this, there will also be Temporary Units. These will be available for construction only during a limited amount of time, increasing the amount of alternatives available and further motivating a development in the game.
The game is somewhat complex and has several details and possible strategies, therefore a vast tutorial was made, there is a support Chat and there are groups of campaigns - assignments with the goal of guiding new players.
Last but not least, another event that has somewhat pleased the players are the Natural Disasters. More exactly, Comet Fall. Fighting Comets is done jointly by all players that are affected. This promotes collaboration between players and their neighbors to try to avoid a Comet Fall and loss of structures and goods.
If the winner does not live in Portugal or if there is preference prizes can be monetary with a value of 66% of the prize.
System Empires waits for you! Good gaming.
