View Full Version : Morality in games

A bunch of games now give you the option to choose a morality for your character. Do you usually play as the good guy helping those in need and walking little old ladies across the street? Or do you play as the bad guy who will stomp on anyone to get ahead faster? Or do you stay in the grey and sometimes help while other times you harm?

I know for me I tend to go the evil route. Yes I am one of those people that roots for the bad guys in movies. The reason I think I tend to lean to the more evil side of things is since in real life I am very nice and usually do the good things and in games I can live on the other side.

I will say that Dragon Age has one of the best morality systems out there. I couldn't bring myself to play as the meanie face the whole time. There is something strangely stratifying to me to play a game where you can just completely be evil though. In inFamous I love just running around and hearing the screams follow.

I always try to stay in the middle but usually I end up being a bit more good than bad :/

For Fable II where I joined the Temple of Shadows and sacrificed my wife >:] yet I still had so many good points that it was still more to the good side :/ man hahah

Really depends on the game, In oblivion i was the bad guy, I joined the thievs guild,And the Assasins guild,Bechus, Why not? good money to earn,

But in fallout 3 im the good guy,The world is such a bad place, Why would i make it even worse? To get money i scavange Raider camps and such, And yeah:D! I just got the Rock-it launcher damn thats a nice gun:D But the ammo weights alot, but i guess i dont need to carry around ammo when im using it,The gun shoots junk!, So i can shoot almost evrything i find lying around:D! Lol, 1 hit in the head and the raider is dead:D!

so, Im evil in the games where there are alot of good guys and not so many evil guys, And in evil games like Fallout 3 where the humans and the good guys are outnumbered by raiders and super mutants and all those other evil things, I choose to be a good guy

That makes sence right?

I agree with Bullman, it really depends on the game.

I prefer being the good guy, in Fall Out 3 I'm currently 100% good. I have the game guide, so I can make sure I don't do the wrong thing. That's really the only game I played that gave me an option. I played fable, but not long enough to decide what I wanted to be.

I have my own agenda. I hate when you have to chose in advance - I like being able to do both - do the fun quests and get all the money. I don't like killing "innocents" unless they get irritating.

Fallout 3 quest Spoiler

Damn i just did a quest in fallout 3 where im suppose to go back to the Vault 101 and help the residents there, The new overseers gone crazy and ****, and when i got there, I went to talk to amata my childhood friend, But when i escaped vault 101 a long time ago, I killed her father bechus he killed Jonas,And had plans of killing me, I think.. Well atleast he was a real dick so i shot him, And the new overseer knew that even though the old overseer was reasonable whit me, I still killed him, So the new one wasnt gonna do the same mistake, So even though i tried to convince him to be reasonable,He started shooting at me, So i killed him.. So, In fallout 3, Even choices you make at the start of the game, can backfire on you later on, So i was trewn out of the Vault 101 and i am never allowed to return... Bechus i killed the overseer in Cold blood, He started the damn shooting! Amata became the new overseer and said "Thanks, Your a hero...And you got to go" So i had no choice but to leave, And never return..Bechus i shot the god damn overseer who shot my friend jonas at the begining of the game, Fallout 3 is the best game ever, All ur choices will matter, Thats why i never killed any innocent people ever in fallout 3, I killed the overseer,But he wasnt innocent He killed jonas, And hes the only one i killed,All other peps i killed was evil guys who shot at me first, Or atleast was planning on it.

So the morality thingy in Fallout 3 pwns, Its the best

I somehow missed this topic, and very interesting it is too.

I tend to play most games thru a couple of times being good first time around, bad the next, and a mixture the third to try and explore as many possibilities as possible. Mind you, there's not many games that allow you to be so robust in your personality. Certainly recent games like Fallout 3 and Dragon Age allowed for a lot more flexibility, but I can't help but feel we've got a lot more to look forward to as well.

I always feel really bad if I'm mean or evil in most rpgs... But it was fun to be evil in Fable/Fable 2. Those are really the only 2 games I could stand to be bad in. O_O

For some reason the characters you interact with just don't make you feel as bad in that game as others do... It's almost comical to be evil.

I think I'm too nice in the gaming realm. -_-

No matter what game it is there's always some annoying character that's just begging for you to unleash your evil side. There was a part in dragon age where a lone beggar approached you to make a donation to him and his starving family. He returns a few other times with more friends saying they all need money, and at the end there's like 20 of them. Now, the first playthrough I was good and helped them out .. on the second I hacked that guy down before ven finding out his plight. I'm not sure which was more satisfying really ..

Yeah, I have to say that I'm strayed from the path of video game righteousness to kill a few of those stupid characters that I just never want to see the rest of the game.... I just started fallout 3 and I have to say. I'm usually too bored with most RPG's by the end to restart and try the opposing alignment... But I really really want to blow up Megaton with that annoying chick in the supply store, so after I play the good girl, i'm all for that bomb going off the second time around.. --_--

I heard that one of the most compelling parts of the new Wii title Silent Hill: Shattered Memories was that in the beginning of the game you are in a shrink's office and answer a series of questions to reveal your "personality". This then alters how the game plays through and what options you have. This is the kind of thing I am very interested in seeing in games.

BTW blowing up megaton still makes me smile today.

That sounds interesting, and more a more complex version of what happens at the beginning of Fallout 3. And yeah, there's something deeply satisfying about blowing up Megaton for sure - I also loved those quests from that zombie place, they just seemed to be more in-keeping with the game's general feel for me. The only thing I noticed was that 'some' of that darker side of the game didn't translate too well into the add-ons.

No, I was confused which one to pick, good or bad. like some quests were unbalanced -- one gives more money than the other. so I did both and then most likely ended up being the bad guy.... haha

I always play the good guy in games, for example in Bioshock I harvested one of the little sisters and felt so bad that I reloaded the game and saved her. In Fallout 3 everybody is so helpless I wouldn't be able to be a bad guy in that game...
