Your PC looks so much tidier than mine mate. My machine has a pile of wires to give Medusa a run for her money.

mine kinda looks like that now. Recently upgraded from the 8600gt to 9600gt gpu and it's like twice the size. I didn't get a chance to tidy up the wires this time - I plan to do it in the future but it looks like a mess right now since I had to curve everything around.

I've actually had both the 8600 gt and 9600gt in the past. The fan actually cracked in half on my old 8600gt. When I eventually ditched a 9600gtx for a 9800gtx I had a bit of a power problem. The 9800gtx uses two six pen power connectors where as the latter only used one.I had to use a molex converter cable to power the thing and I didn't get the best power that way. When I got a new PSU I made sure to get two six pen power connectors and I now i actually get less weird hiccups out of my card...
Here I go rambling on about hardware, such is the life eh?...

My old 8600GT burned out in February. It seemed like the Fan stopped working for a while and when I was playing L4D, it just overheated and burned out. I was able to get it replaced since it comes with a lifetime warranty. I've had it for some time and XFX is true to their word about their lifetime warranty.
The replacement 8600GT lasted until last month, then out of no where it started overheating. When idling, the GPU would be around 85-90 Degrees Celsius - so instead of having that replaced I just got a 9600gt, as a way to upgrade. I would have gotten the 9800 but the price for my 9600 was just right at the time.
And my PSU has a load of free connectors left - even with one 6 pin plugged into my GPU, I think I have another one. But for some weird reason, I think the 9600 uses two connectors too. Next time I open up my case, I'll look for that.
Hardware discussion is good :) if good enough, you can make a career out of it. That's what I'm trying to do with a computer building company at the moment. Have built plenty of them in my life time so yeah...such a life isn't so bad :)

My new laptop that I just got has....this stuff:
4 GB of RAM
320 GB Hard drive, 238 GB available now.
That's all I care to know. It runs Zoo Tycoon 2 and modded Morrowind on the highest graphics settings no problem and has less than 1 minute boot up time. To compare to my last laptop:
256MB of RAM
37 GB hard drive, 30 minute boot up at least.

I was wondering linux, if your custom computer business offers SSD? (type of hard drive)
- compaq presario sr1403wm
- amd sempron processor 3000+
- 2gb RAM
- GeForce2 MX (had to remove the new one cause it was causing problems on screen.)
- 69.2 GB Hard drive space. (quite lame, but oh well)
- dvd burner
I needs a new compooter. =\

Well...customer picks the parts so if you want solid state disk then you can have ssd. Of course it costs more for a lot less space compared to SATA drives so it's not as popular yet.

the thing I like about them is that they're super fast. but... then again, its the capacity.

Unless you're trying to access the entire hard drive in one go, the little bit of speed they offer in the SSD drives isn't that noticeable. There are sata drives with 10k RPM speed available. More expensive than regular drives but cheaper than SSD with a lot more space.
Diligence109
05-10-2010, 10:07 AM
the big lure of a SSD is that it has no moving parts - you could throw the thing across a room while it were writing data and you wouldn't corrupt anything (in theory and assuming you had a nice long cable and the impact of it landing wasn't too destructive)
Putting that into a tower, where it's not going to move at all, kinda defeats the purpose. Now, putting that into a laptop that you're going to throw into your backpack and run across campus with... that's my dream computer ;)

I actually have 4 or 5 spare 3Com WAPs, but they suck.
The Linksys Router running DD-WRT (http://dd-wrt.com) allows me to run it as a WAP and is much more stable than my 3Com WAPs.

3com equipment sucks in general in my experience. the 3com waps at my school tend to go down for hours at a time on a daily basis and one would completely die every couple of months. now we've got cisco waps and we're getting rid of the last 3com switches next year. (edit: my school's equipment is just ancient though, so that might be the problem.)
i wish i had a decent enough router to run dd-wrt but for now i'm stuck on a crappy 2-wire gateway/router that we lease from the isp. perhaps you could suggest a adsl modem and router capable of dd-wrt in the sub-$150 range?

Well, here is the complete compatibility (http://dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Supported_Devices) list.
To be honest, I've found the Linksys WRT54G to be the best wireless router to run DD-WRT. You can usually find them on eBay or CraigsList for almost next to nothing.
The Ver. 2 is my favorite because it has the most flash memory available, but any version should do just fine. :D

Lol @ Joker by the way XD That is why the Jokervirus is the virus that you DONT want on your computer, cause it'd rather shoot itself than have an anti virus attempt to remove him =P
And you guys have a messy desk too, I'm glad, cause my desk is covered with so much **** that a roach would feel welcome! I had an old bag of popcorn sitting on it for 3 weeks before the small of old butter and stale salt made me throw it out due to the constant gag feeling XD
I do have to clean it up though, its bad for the comp to sit in dust collectors for too long! But honestly I dont care too much about that piece of crap, I look forward to replace it with the top dog, Alienware!

Epic thumbs up for the sore attempt at hiding the fact that all the **** that you normally have on your desktop, is 'cleaned up' by being moved to your bed, at which point, when you go to sleep, you shove it all onto the floor.
And around the cycle goes, right .exe?::-)
PS: like my new nickname for you? To me you are now named .exe hope you like it, its gonna stick :p

LOL @ the huge mug set in the center of the desk! Lol XD Your gaming morale booster?
And thats some keyboard =S Havnt seen an antique like that in years, no offense! Atleast if it is as old as it looks from here.
Its not meant to be a joke though, I actually wish I had that kinda keyboard, but they're so damned rare, its kinda like an old car from the 1950s, old as hell and outdated, but OH SO COOL!!!
I want one =S:shocked:

The keyboard is around a decade old. It's very reliable. I could get a new one any time I want but why end a good thing. I have an older one connected to my server. That one has problems though. Spacebar and the "N" key doesn't always work.

Tend to prefer the good old keyboards myself, I do have a bit newer that what you had there, but its these old, standard ones that tend to work the longest. All these new ones with annoying layout and 50+ special buttons... I do not care for it... Even though some of them do look amazingly good :)
I have my merc stealth keyboard which is pretty reliable. After 2 years of occasional hardcore gaming, all of the buttons still work, and all of the button lights are still one! And all 3 colors with all 3 intensity settings all work! YAY!
But I'm pretty sure that it wont last as long as some antique keyboard...Just like with cars, they simply built them better back in the day, am I right?

This is my computer, I have no idea what any of this means if it is good or bad or what but I also have a hp and a asus (netbook) My hp has a battery problem and the Asus needs the recovery disk ( I bought it specifically for Afghanistan W/added warranty and I was right it got broke, but I didn't make a recovery disk and need to buy one in order to have it working again, they had to change the screen and the hard drive in it from what I told them was a shipping mishap when in all honesty someone stepped on it and I threw it across my tent when it pissed me off for the last time!)

With the money you spent on that though, you could have one hell of a monster desktop PC..

Yeah I play some games on this, but nothing to write home about. Just a few stupid games. But I am going to factory restore it. I am having a couple problems with it. And I am not a fan of desktops. But this thing is huge and I doubt I will be taking it on road trips with me. I thought my hp was big. All and all I do like this computer. But I shouldn't of spent the money on it really.
