Any online games disconnect and fail.

Not sure if this is a port thing, firewalls are off.
my newtwork adapters are:
Atheros 802.11 a/b/g/n dualband wireless newtwork module
Nvidia nForce 10/100 mbps ethernet

drivers say they're up to date.

It's just with games? They connect and disconnect randomly? Or they don't connect at all?

Its only games and it just gets really laggy for a few minutes, then its perfectly fine, then lag for a few minutes, etc etc makes games impossible to play.

And that's only on my desktop, on my laptop its fine, I can play games without any lag at all.

If possible, connect your modem directly to your desktop - it'll help you figure out whether it's the router or the computer.

And are you on windows XP? What internet are you connected to? Does it show a Local Area Network connection or a regular internet connection? Should show up on the bottom right part of the taskbar is set up.

Its a little hard to connect it directly to the modem (modem -> basement, desktop -> in brothers room upstairs) so unforunately I can't do that, but if my laptop works fine would that indicate that it's probably the computer?

Using windows vista, and I believe it's a LAN connection.

If you can go into the properties of windows vista and then edit the IP protocol area, you should be able to specify it's internal IP.

Then you'd have to fill in the IP address area with your internal IP and the gateway followed by the subnet masks. You can see the following link on how to use command prompt to get your IP: Windows Vista ipconfig Tutorial (http://www.ncsu.edu/resnet/windows/ipconfig/vista.php)

Just use "ipconfig /all" in command prompt and you'll get all the numbers you need.

And then to specify the IP address, follow this: Change TCP/IP settings
(http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-TCP-IP-settings)

Edit the ipv4 settings and input all the values in that you see in the command prompt window.

I have a ton of computers at home including several laptops. I used to have connection issues as well just with my desktop if I didn't specify the internal IP address. When I moved to windows 7, I had the same issue. I got disconnected every few hours. Once I remembered to set that up again, I've been online fine for over a week now. So hopefully this helps. Note: this whole thing is assuming your computer and router are having issues communicating.

But the other thing is, if you only get lag, it could be that another computer in your house is hogging the upload speed of your internet. If you have wireless enabled on your router, make sure you set a tough password in it. You could have neighbors feeding off your connection and slowing you up. The best way to figure out if it's your computer or router is to directly connect the computer to the modem but since that can't be done, I can only come up with more theories.

Also you can try to get a switch and connect that to the desktop and leave the router for wireless IF you believe the issue is with the router.
