Well, Fraps is ok. You can either buy the full version or download the free one, but the free version has a max of 30 seconds, so it's only good for short videos. Although that sucks, it's easy to upload to youtube if that's what you're aiming for, because I already have 5 videos that used Fraps. It's great for online games, but I wouldn't reccommed it unless you plan on making videos 30 seconds or less.

Maybe I'm a bit slow or something hama, but I used movie maker for quite a while, although when I did it was for only VERY basic shizzles. Later, once I wanted something a bit more robust, I searched around for decent (and ofc affordable) movie-making/editing programs I was quite pleasantly surprised. Ofc things like Sony Vegas Pro are pure pwn, but some of the better ones don't have the best ui despite being very powerful. However, I ended up getting one that cost about the same as a video game, so not too bad really, and it rated above Vegas anyhow - depends how much you're gonna use it though I suppose.
P.s. I know this doesn't really help much, but just my thoughts :)

You could try the trial version of Magix. I think they have one the full is really good so the trial should be fine .

Yeah I had a similar question... I am looking for a program that is compatible with .mkv files... specifically, I would like it to be able to take a large mkv file and make short (ranging from a few seconds to a minute) clips out of it, saving those clips in .avi or .mp4 or any format that is compatible with windows movie maker...
Any ideas?
