About 12 hours had passed since a T-shirt vendor in Times Square had alerted police to a suspicious S.U.V. that was packed with a bomb. But by 7 a.m. Sunday, with the S.U.V. towed away and the streets safe and reopened, the vendor was tired, cranky and reluctant to say much about his feat.

“I’m fed up,” said the vendor, who declined to give his name as he headed toward a taxicab in Times Square around 7 a.m. “We’ve been up since 6 a.m. of yesterday morning.”

The vendor, who was swarmed by television cameras, wore a name tag around his neck that identified him as Lance Orton. A law enforcement official confirmed that his first name was Lance.

The vendor had seen smoke billowing from the rear of the S.U.V., which was parked awkwardly near the curb and was running, shortly before 6:30 p.m. on Saturday. Within moments, the vendor alerted a mounted police officer; the officer smelled gunpowder near the car and an evacuation of Times Square was ordered.

Around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, the vendor and several others he worked with collected the T-shirts and tables they had abandoned on 45th Street and Broadway when Times Square was first evacuated. After collecting his belongings, the vendor walked down 45th Street in search of a taxicab to take him home.

“I’m not going to say nothing, I’m not going to say nothing,” he said when first approached by a gaggle of reporters.

As he walked down the street, employees from Junior’s restaurant stood outside applauding him. He briefly entered the restaurant before heading toward 44th Street.

He walked with a limp, had a cane, wore a white fedora and had a hoop earring in his right ear.

When asked if he was proud of his actions, he said: “Of course, man. I’m a veteran. What do you think?”

The vendor said that he had served during the Vietnam War and had been selling wares on the street for about 20 years.

“I don’t have too much of a choice, nobody’s giving me a job,” he said.

He said that he was reluctant to speak with members of the media because they had twisted his words when they interviewed him in recent years.

He got into the back seat of the taxi, took off his hat and used it to fan his face.

Before he left, he was asked what he had to say to New Yorkers.

“See something, say something,” he said.

I saw this news when I turned on the TV this morning. Kinda scary but luckily the bomb/detonator malfunctioned just before it went off otherwise thousands of people would have been affected. It was on a Saturday night and I've been to Time Square on Saturday Nights, literally thousands of people on the sidewalks alone and countless more in the buildings around the area.

Now they just have to find out who tried this crap. There are a ton of Security cameras around Time Square, hopefully they put those to use. Hate people sometimes.

Yeah hopefully they the people. And like you said with the security, it shouldn't be that hard to get at least a picture of who did it. Finding them now might be hard though.

what would we be looking at it that bomb did go off?

It would have been spun as another terrorism attack on US soil I bet, renewed interest in the middle east? War with Iran?

Seems like a large jump but we did invade Iraq after 9/11 and that was totally unrelated.

It was a incendiary device (fireball - no nails or anything inside) that would have split the vehicle in half and caused some casualties but nothing like the death tolls in Iraq or Afghanistan.

I'm not sure how Obama would deal with it since it was claimed by the Taliban to be their work.

Would it freak everyone out again? Oh totally since terrorist attacks aren't' something were use too on our own soil, especially in our biggest city and in car bomb form. I'm pretty sure if it went off you'd see a lot more soldiers around time's square and the subways.

Security is increased there and the cops actually caught the guy that owned the vehicle. I haven't heard anything else out of it. Not sure how far that got.

My criminology professor has a lot of pull in the police and probably would have gotten some info for us but class is over...so I probably won't get any insider news anytime soon.

I'm surprised it hasn't happened sooner honestly.

It's all up in the air right now...

-Theories range from a "lone wolf" terrorist like Timothy McVeigh who was offended by South Park's Muhammad episode which would explain why the truck was outside a comedy central corp. building.

-The original terrorists that claimed responsibility are possibly lieing as well as other groups so no suspect has been found.

-The truck was stolen and the owner was found to have nothing to do with it.

I think the lone wolf theory is pretty spot on. I'm pretty sure that's how they got so far by being a citizen and just snapping and setting up the bomb. I would figure a terrorist cell would have been breached by now but you never know what the CIA/FBI are up too.

What hasn't happened sooner? The bomb in time square? or the cops finding the guy?

And the fertilizer he used was non-explosive, and he tried to go the way of Timothy McVeigh but didn't quite get it. I would probably go with the lone wolf theory as well because the results may have been very different if an actual group was behind this.

And CIA and FBI still don't like to cooperate with each other. These two agencies need to a new set of ego.

I'm surpised that a terrorist group hasn't bombed us (besides in the Middle East) sooner.

Its scary that this is happening. Im not really sure why terrorist are picking NYC, but it does have to do with symbolism, according to my education in my class of Terrorism. The director of Intel Dennis Blare did say within 3-6 months there would be a major attack, some do consider this, if it were to be executed, would have been major.
I was told he was caught because he bought the vehicle just a day or two before and used his real first name and FBI, ATF, and CIA were able to trace it and find him.

Im not afraid but im worried Al-Qaeda, Taliban, or Hizbellah will commit a major attack on us soon and after that attack we will lose faith in our government.
