Anyways, stupid sony dvd burner messed up on me today, so I went to this random computer shop, spent money on a brand new dvd burner.
gonna get straight to the point, What formats can dvd-RAM burn? 4.7 dvd+r?
8.5 dvd+R (DL)?
*a question before I head to the store & get these type of media,
please help me? thanks in advance

It should be able to burn the two types you mentioned but you should look at the box, it'll tell you what formats it can do. Usually they can do a lot. I have an old burner right now and it can burn pretty much anything. Both +R, -R, RW dvd/cd, etc.

it didn't come with a box, the person just installed it & made sure it worked, & that was it.
I forgot to ask him what formats does it burn. Like with my sony one, I tried burning a 8.5gb Dual layer disc but it didn't seem to work... but oh well. I'll try it out Linux. Thanks

Ah. I'd never let anyone else open up my pc. What kind of a sony burner did you have? And what did he install now? You should be able to search the model online and have a look.
And since the other guy installed it for you, I hope he gave you your sony drive back. I've seen too many cases of the shops keeping the old parts, fixing them, and then reselling them as new or refurbished. Same goes for a lot of things actually, even cars.

he installed an LG dvd-ram burner. don't know the model number of the sony one or this one, but that was just a plain dvd burner that was faulty. & yes, I asked if this 'new' drive was refurbished or used, & they said it was completely new. now hopefully this one wont die on me, but I have a feeling it will... eventually. (I make a lot of backup copies of my sister's movies.)

LG is good. I have a Sony drive myself, had it for about 2 and a half years and burned hundreds of cds/dvds and it works fine. But to research your drives on the net, you can get the model number by calling the guy and asking or opening the computer case and having a look. But again, that's IF you want to know.

thats what I just did linux, & they said 'it should be able to copy dual layer discs'
that way I wont have to keep buying case by case of dvd-r's or dvd+r's. - in other words to put 2 movies onto 1 disc.

You buy single cases of dvds? or whole packs? I have like 6-7 containers of a 100 DVD/CDs - not easy for me to find anything but I get your point. Make more physical room.

I only get the whole packs. this store near me sells the 25 capacity ones so its the only one I buy, I would upgrade to 50 packs or 100 packs but... low on funds.
but I already let you know that the Dual layer cds work! which is good news. so I copied my sister's indiana jones movie, I have 1 & 2 on one cd. & they both work well! YAY!

Yeah, You told me, it's great that it works. Gotta love when things work they way you want them to.
As for buying 50 or 100 packs, how much do you pay for your 25 pack? 100 Pack DVDs (4.7gb) costs about $20 or so for me. I have a few 8.5gb ones but I didn't buy them in larger volume.

I pay about a good.... $26 for the 25. quite pricey. it should be lower, but I dont know. I just don't know. inflation perhaps?
& for the 8.5gb ones I spent like $32. man.... they're just asking for more money

You're welcome. keep an eye on tigerdirect.com too - they have specials from time to time. But on average, newegg is better than Tiger.
