What are some cool bands we should check out that people have never really heard of.

I suggest checking out Band of Skulls and LCD Soundsystem

Well, it would help if you would listen some genres.

if you're into Nu Metal I'd recommend 10 Years and/or Shinedown - they're known here and there but not listened to enough.

Local bands are always a great way to go but they're not always good... I'd recommend a local Ithaca band named New Neighbors - they're really good (alt rock.) They used to be called IY so you might find more music under that name.

if someone bumps this thread more I'll remember to come back and think of more to post...

No specific genre, buh!

Anything you have heard that you think is good and other people should listen to.

Everyone should check out BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB

Anyone see the Ketal One Vodka commercial that is black and white with the guys playing poker? Their song "Spread Your Love" is played over it

Will you define "non-mainstream" for me please? I mean I could probably name a bunch of bands most of you have never heard of but just how "mainstream" are we talking here? I never really got what made a band "mainstream" or not; for instance BRMC aren't mainstream? I thought they were kind of big, but I am seriously out of touch with what most people listen to anyway

If you like that silly indie music style, I'll pimp out Scissors for Lefty. My cousin is the lead singer *shrug* But I have no idea if a lot of the music I listen to is technically mainstream or not. And I listen to a lot of music from other countries; does that make it mainstream? For instance certain bands are popular in, say, Japan or Germany but relatively unknown here... anyway I dunno, the term bothers me, but enough of that

if you're into indie stuff, neutral milk hotel is pretty popular but not in a mainstream way

and...i'm into metal. i could recommend some bands that are outside of the mainstream, like death, strapping young lad, meshuggah, celtic frost. but if you're into extreme metal, you've heard of all of those bands. then there's bands like burzum and darkthrone, which might not be known to anybody who's just dabbling in music, but if you do research into extreme metal, black metal is one of the most popular forms, and those are 2 of the most popular artists in the black metal scene.

here's a song by each of those bands

note i do not like this band -------------------^

that song is long and repetitive, but it's worth listening to and ignoring the bad quality IMO^^

I'm talking about bands you dont really ever hear on the radio. None of that Lady Gaga, Jay Z, or Green Day.

Just really good bands who aren't superstars but you have heard at like festivals or opening acts.

Passion Pit is another cool one

Ok well then think less popular then.

New bands. Things that you discover that you have never heard before but enjoy and think others would to

peter gabriel genesis isn't mainstream and it's epic. they're all great musicians and have crafted very artsy progressive rock. i only like 1 song enough to listen to it though

All right, Clazziquai. I am pretty certain they will not be the style of pretty much 98% of the forum, but... I enjoy them. They've gotten bigger recently, I think. But... anyway. South Korean band, happy/mellow/dance/chill.

Umm... not sure if this is mainstream... buuut, I don't really have a way to find out. -_- I listen to an Industrial band called Combichrist, and they're pretty good imo. Pretty high up there, but sort of on the heavy side. So, there's mine. ^_^
