I finished ff13 over a month ago and I feel like I really need to vent about it. I'm a huge ff fan and have played nearly every game in the series. I found ff13 to be good in only a few aspects and very bad in all others. I wonder if I'm judging the game harshly because I've played all the games and I know what Square enix is capable of. Any thoughts?
I liked and appreciated the graphics, but the plot was unclear and nonsensical, the characters were very one-note and static, and why where there no towns to go to or other people to talk to in the game? I got very tired of the entire game only encompassing the main characters. Plus the only extra missions were hunts...I must sound like a complete hater right now haha

I'm not going to vote because I haven’t finished it yet, but I certainly haven’t been drawn into it like I have with previous games. The battle system where you have to have your tactics 100% absolutely right with boss encounters is frustrating.
I probably won't finish it for awhile as I've lent it to a friend while I concentrate on other things.

I haven't beaten this yet, but I've basically enjoyed the game so far. It certainly isn't fantastic; no arguments there. I wasn't expecting it to be good at all after FFXII (which is atrocious), so I suppose I wasn't let down. Obviously it's annoying walking around in a straight line most of the time, and it doesn't have much variety. I find the plot interesting enough, however. It keeps me entertained. Definitely not great, though.
Also I like the boss encounters. :P And I like the combat and paradigm system well enough. But yeah, overall I feel pretty "meh" about it.

yea i feel pretty much the same way muffincat. whenever you beat it let me know, I'm curious how you like the ending.
Ohhhh and another thing about the game, there's no real romantic interest in this game which is completely fine with me. But whats up with Feng and Vanille, they're extra close! I was getting nervous that they would make out when the game started getting closer to the end. lol that would be weirdddd

jak, here's the thread you were expecting from me. haha.
anyways, i thought the music, graphics, combat, and characters were great. the linear progression and story were meh though.
i'm nearing the end of chapter 12, so i'll have to finish it soon.
by the way, you can't go into towns and talk to people because you're fugitives. common sense.
btw, i liked FF12. i pretty much ignored the story from the beginning, but i thought it was fun to play

I havent played FF13 but i do plan on making it my next game to rent and review, if it hasnt been done yet.
I have played all FF from 1 to 10 for consoles and i believe that FF13 is just as good as all the ones before it.
One thing that annoys me, there is no steady storyline so its like ok we got this guy next game, got new people wtf.

that'll change once you play it. it's good, but not great. if the production values weren't so incredibly high, this game would be a lot worse.

I actually really enjoyed this aspect of it; it's like a novel this way :). I thought it was an enjoyable way to change pace every once in a while, and force you to use characters that you might not. Sometimes the combination (in early parts of the game) forces you to battle in ways that you perhaps wouldn't normally. I found it intriguing.

I feel like the ff franchise has been going down hill for years. like the best one was def 7 and 8 was good but worse than 7 and 9 was worse than 8 and so on.

i think he's talkin about the fact that all the final fantasy games are unrelated except for the names of spells and chocobo
but i didn't like that part of it, cuz i hated using some characters (mostly fang)
and if lightning was in the party, i wanted to use her. Com/Rav/Med good combination. but i'm stuck with other people who suck

FFXIII was my first venture into the FF series and I don't think I want to go back after this.
I'm only 18 hours in but I reckon its a good example of what happens when developers forget that FF is a game, an RPG game, not a HD animation. First look, pretty, intro was impressive but that's about it.Story line: I still don't understand what is going on. There is no background, no foundation. Just bit and pieces
Combat system: real time, similar to star ocean but you can only control 1 character, if you die, game over. You can revive your teammate but they are not smart enough to revive you? To make it worse, to use certain skills or spells, you will need to swap classes, and since this is real time battle, while you are scrolling thru your ability list, selecting which target to attack. Enemies will continue hammering you non-stop. And there is no option to turn combat to turn-based either. I dont like having such a loose grip on things.
But to be fair there were good bits, and it wasn't just pretty, more like stupendously animated, but there was so much more that annoyed me.

trust me when i say, 13 is probably the pretties entry in the series, but probably also one of the weakest. try any of the ps1 entries, or FFX. there are also some good spinoffs.

I completely agree with you secret spy. and epsilonx good suggestion for someone who hasn't played any other games in the series.
I was annoyed how the game wouldn't allow you to fully select your party till pretty far into the game. The graphics were beautiful yes, but the areas were long, straight, and boring. The only exception to this for me was that giant area on pulse Archylte steppe I believe it was called

I disagree. IX is one of my favorites, and X was really quite good. I think VIII, IX, and X were all better than VII; VII gets so much undeserved hype that it is ridiculous.
X-2 was terrible, XII was not worth playing imo (every time I try to pick it up to finish it, I fall asleep).
I don't want to turn this onto a "OMG NO THIS FINAL FANTASY WUZ WAI BETTERZ OMGOMG!!!1!!!11!11~" thread, but felt the need to voice my opinion. :P

idk, while i feel FF7 was yes a bit overrated, it was still a good game, and way better than 8 (and no, i had no problems with the junction system or whatever it was called)
still haven't played 9 or 10

I played 7 and loved it but then after playing 10 I just stayed away from the series. I'm pretty sure unless they decide to make one that doesn't look like 10 then I'll play it.

I feel you, I'm also a huuuge fan of the ff series and I think I became hostile whenever anyone mentioned ff13.. I was really expecting a lot since I thought that more than 10 ff titles where really great.
First of all these stupid, boring messed up corridors through the whole game.. I know that most of the ff games are pretty linear with few choices to make, but damn.. in this game all you do is walk forward, save at five different locations on the same screen, maybe get awarded with a cutscene.. and if you're lucky, something will happen along the way and I'm not talking about the "not so random encounters anymore", I mean something interesting. The people in the game are sooo boring.. they say like 1-2 lines and isn't contributing to the game at all.
The graphics are indeed very good.. but since you cannot explore the world and only walk in a very specific path except for one location which is really good the first 10 minutes, the graphic isn't very important, it's like a nice scenery but all you can do is walk past it.
The story was quite confusing and I actually understood the whole concept after I beat the final boss, but I have to say, It wasn't good. Actually it was really really bad. I also don't know why they had to keep the game so ignorant against the player.. I mean people who buy a game wants to have things explained to them, not get a pile of texts about the story etc. I want to be able to start the game and get it explained to me as the game goes on. Imagine if you were to see a movie like Troy. Would you rather get a thick book handed to you which you had to read in order to understand anything in the movie because they would keep going on and refer to 100 different made up words which you wouldn't understand? Or would you rather get it explained as the movie went on?
There is also the characters..
There is only one real final fantasy character in this game and that is Snow.. There is 4 people who annoyed the hell out of me, vanille, which is also the narrator.. I couldn't stand her.. Hope, that whining little ¤/"#/&¤/"%¤!!! and Sazh which just isn't funny, Oh and there is also Lighting which is a real *itch against everyone and everything.
Usually when I buy a console game I wake up early just to play the game but I had to FORCE myself to play it, I just thought that I paid too much to leave it unfinished.. but it wasn't enjoyable at all, some scenes, sure, but most of the game is just a failure.
Unfortunately.

I agree with Jonte on the being forced to play it front. Before lending it to a friend, I wasn't really playing it because I was massively enjoying it, but because I felt obliged to, It's still quite a good game but it's just so repetitive. I haven’t touched it for about 6 weeks now. I guess I'll go back to it once I have a few other games out the way.

i played it for a bit last night, it was basically me buttonmashing my way through a few bosses, and wondering why I enjoyed it so much at first. I'm probably going to sell it after I finish it

After I got out of the first area, and about a good hour of pure cutscenes. I just thought, no wonder I keep hearing people calling this game a disappointment. All it is, is cutscene, cutscene, cutscene, run around, button mashing time, cutscene, cutscene, run around...
It's the most repeatitive thing ever. So boring. I'll probably finish playing it one day anyways.
I think after this game, Final Fantasy games are going to drown, shrivel up, and die. Unless someone saves it before it's too late.
It just feels like any greatness in future FF games won't happen anymore.

I doubt FF is anywhere near the point of shriveling up and dying. Many called this a disappointment and it got bad word of mouth from the get go and still managed to sell in region of 5 million

It's because it lives on it's name final fantasy, even if 80% of the people said that call of duty 7 was the worst game ever, you would still buy it to see if it's true, because the previous games were so good.
So a few more of the same bad calibre of games and it will certainly shrivel up and die.
However, Squaresoft is to clever and will listen to what the world has to say about their main installments of the series. In agito there will be a another battle system for instance. And even if they were planning the battle system before ff13 got it's thumbs down I still doubt they will continue in the same path because of the bad critic...I know it.. or at least they should.. or else I'll kill em :D

it's not much different from old school rpgs, but instead of cutscenes you got text boxes back then. Besides, I liked the cutscenes. But the game is pretty boring IMO. you walk down a straightforward path and along the way you run into enemies and cutscenes. Nothing else to do. I've been disappointed in modern RPGs a lot lately. Dragon Age was really good but the open ended-ness of it made the game rather unfocused I thought, and there's like no replay value in it (for me at least) and the other PS3/360 rpgs i've played were really boring (fable 2, enchanted arms) Valkyria Chronicles was good but at the end it got stupid. I'm thinkin i'm just gonna stick to PS1 rpgs (if i can afford them)
