View Full Version : What bugs you about RPGs?

You may remember a little while back that I said I had defeated the weird breast beast thing in the Orzammar section of Dragon Age. I thought this would mean I was almost done with The Dark Roads but apparently not! I'm now stuck again because I have a bad party for taking on all those Golems! (My mage, Zevran, Sten, Dog)
I've really enjoyed this game but due to losing interest because of the difficulty I've been in Orzammar and the The Dark Roads for two months now.
So to make this not just a mere rant, what parts of RPG's have particularly frustrated you?

Good god renzo .. you're still in there???? I bet you wish you'd taken my advice now lol :P
Anyways, back on topic .. bits that frustrate me in RPGs is when you don't always realise whether you've made a 'good' or 'bad' decision in the dialogue choices. Sometimes there isn't a clear enough indication of which way a choice will take you, and even more frustratingly (in the case of ME2 at times and others) is that the text choices don't necessarily match the spoken words and tone .. this bugs the hell out of me. Beyond that the only other thing that gripes me is when you just know the customisation in a character doesn't go as far as you think it should, so you end up playing a slightly limp toon.
I love rpg games .. but why games sometimes compromise on the 'r' bit baffles me ..

I did indeed take your advice and go back! I suppose I can go back again but my low supplies of Lyrium means it'll be a case of stop starting.
It is slightly annoying how the rest of the game had flowed well up until The Dark Roads which has alas, been very much a grind!

don't forget to clear out lyrium powder from vendors (esp the one in the mage tower/circle) to build up ur pots before you go back.
i know what you mean though, the deep roads was a LOT bigger than i'd expected - comparing it to other faction/rep areas.
YOU CAN DOOO IT!

Uh, I would say nothing but.... I hate the missions or side quests that are timed.

i hate grinding. I just like following stories. I also hate backtracking.
my favorite game of all time is legend of dragoon. it was awesome.
i also hate when RPGs have lame or gimmicky stories. like FF13. you get a handful of characters that are a victim of circumstances. FF7 and LoD both had well thought out plots.
i also hate when RPGs make you go through obnoxious dungeons and fight ridiculous bosses that require a specific strategy. I'd rather just pummel the boss until it dies.
and i don't really like when games make you use characters you don't normally use, if its not plot related at all (for example, in FF13 it just switches around the characters you use and doesn't let you control it. in LoD you can choose any character you want, except you need to use the lead character, and sometimes characters have like a personal vendetta thing going on, like somebody just kidnapped their friend, and you have to use them)

this made me thought about that one ... boss from FF8. a boss called adel who has sucked your partner into his chest. meaning, you gotta heal your partner & kill adel at the same time. kinda lame.

well stuff like that is alright, but i mean like in FF13 the summons, the only way you can beat them is by like healing your party member a lot, or guarding. they have specific strategies and stuff. you can't just damage them, you won't win.
there's also like, in SMT: Nocturne, there are bosses where its almost impossible to win unless you either grind like a madman or figure out the specific strategy

oh you mean like the complex strategies that makes it difficult to figure out. I hate those too... haha.

when you can't go back and undo something. For instance - you accidentaly killed someone you were meant to help... and then you fail the quest 'cos of it... I guess i like having second chances in games.
Also, when you get to a place and it's mostly talking... and talking... and talking... and it's too much hassle to go back and find something to kill. I get really, really bored and annoyed at that point.

well, while RPGs do have their faults, i think with games, they have the least things that bug me. sports games and fighting games i normally can't figure out and i don't like anything about them, and normally about half the features of a shooter bug me

i actually prefer rpgs before voice acting came out. when it'd pretty much just show you the map and characters, and you had to go through the text boxes

Whenever I play a really good one I wished they had done it in this way or that way in order to expand the universe of the rpg. So I guess, what bugs me is ... me

AAH those were the times.. But yeah, I'd always name every character after me and my friends and family... You got so involved in the story :D "Oh no, Sephiroth stabbed my sister in the back", I'll kill that son of a .. =)

that adds to the realism. if somebody in real life dies you can't undo it.

backtracking has to be the most annoying thing that can happen when playing RPG games for sure

I hate backtracking, or having to redo battles. It gets on my nerves. Fighting the same enemies or boss for the 3rd to 10th time.
And I completely agree that older RPGs without voice acting are better than the newer ones that do. When I don't have to read, I just fall asleep too.

I used to hate getting 'game over' & then starting the level all over again, but then I use that strategy to see some weaknesses in boss battles, puzzles, etc. I still hate it sometimes tho.

I don't like turned-based RPGs. I do not find them engaging.

If anyone is interested in an update, i THINK I'm at the end of the Deep Roads now, but once again I'm stuck on a boss battle - and this time I can't go back and change my party.
I've really not enjoyed this part of the game, someone please tell me the Elf quests are not as much of a grind!

the elf quests are fun. I didn't mind the deep roads quests, but my god the circle of mages or whatever its called pissed me off

A few friends of mine have echoed your annoyance with the Circle of Mages, but I found it fine. Perhaps that might have something to do with my character being a mage.

What I love in a good RPG is Difficult puzzles but however i dont like a puzzle that is difficult but so obviously blatent that you cant see the answer. For example the first planet you land on in Star Ocean Till the end of time. You need a code to enter the door. The numbers are painted on the walls on the way there lol, and another time, same game, there is a part where you have to make a perfect shadow to enter a room tho it isnt really writen anywhere it is fun but there is a point where you stop and think, really is this puzzule really required on a three disk game?

i didn't mind the tower, i just hated the part where u go into the fade. its incredibly easy to die there (its not hard, its just easy to get caught off guard and die)

Ah yes, I'd forgotten about the fade.
I may have to shamefully bite the bullet and restart Dragon Age. I can't complete the Anvil of the Void due to a combination of poor party choice - my mage character, Oghren, Zevran, Dog - and the fact I have no potions or Lyrium and can't leave the area to go get some.

What bugs me about RPGs, I play world of warcrack, is the stupidity of others you run into and how gms and others are unwilling to help when you have a legit problem. Like my brother got his account hacked took gms upwards of a week and half just to say hello to him.

I hate back tracking, when you have worked really hard, you achieve the goal, then they send you back.......*knocks head hard against wall over and over again*

I'm definitely feeling the backtracking hate... ugh worst game design idea ever just recycling crap for more gameplay hours...
What bothers me is pointless "waypoint" quests where you mindless trek to point A and then make your way to point B and get your reward. Maybe you have to grind monster C at point A in the meantime... A good game doesn't put a big star on the map that you mindlessly gravitate towards like a moth to the flame, you should be able to explore and understand your environment and find that goal yourself @.@
Borderlands really got dull for me cause of that. along with tons of other RPGs and MMOs that follow the same cheap easy to design and produce scheme...

24 hours game time since Saturday... Is that bad?
I think I'm 'role playing' too much. Alistair keeps trying to hit on my female rogue character and I'm going to feel like a git if I make him feel bad.
I only have eyes for Leliana ;)

That some RPG games the masters of certain stages are easy to kill and you can figure out there pattern fast.

The MUD I used to play annoys the hell out of me now. There is a small group of users who run one of the most evil clans. So all they do is run around and kill everyone, barely helping, making people not want to play. :(
