Police arrested a Greenwood mother last week for slamming her 10-month-old baby girl head-first onto the pavement in an apartment parking lot. Officers said the 23-year-old mother admitted to using meth prior to the incident.
Officers were called to a Greenwood apartment complex around 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning after residents reported Kayla Neighbors, 23, was screaming about dropping her baby, Aryana Neighbors.
Police say shortly after the first call, a resident called back to report that Neighbors had thrown Aryana down on the concrete.
According to the police report, apartment residents responded to Neighbors' screams about dropping her baby. Once the residents determined the baby was OK, they handed Aryana back to Neighbors. That's when, according to witnesses, Neighbors got a "cracked out" look on her face and slammed Aryana down head-first onto the pavement.
In the probable cause, several shocked witnesses reported hearing the horrible sound of Aryana's head hitting the ground.
"Like a rock just hitting the concrete. It was bad for all of us to see," said witness Mary Shaw Jeffers. “She picked her up and threw her down.”
The responding officers say Neighbors admitted to using methamphetamine and that they found a glass pipe inside the apartment.
Police say Neighbors was hysterical and said that her husband was dead inside the house. Her husband, John Neighbors, was eventually found unharmed.
John Neighbors’ father, Gary Neighbors, told 24-Hour News 8 that John Neighbors was not home at the time of the incident but was charged with neglect when he returned.
Aryana Neighbors was rushed to Riley Hospital with a skull fracture. She is now out of the hospital and living with her grandparents.
“She's doing well, she was released from Riley on Saturday evening. We brought her home.” Gary Neighbors said.
Kayla Neighbors, who is six months pregnant, was arrested and charged with battery, she remains at the Johnson County Jail.
This pisses me off so badly Im mad and sad at the same time, this is why we need stricter drug laws and harsher punishments. She will most likely get the baby back too unless someone fights and pays a hell of a lot of court fines.

I am like so effing pissed at this mother right now. Whatever punishment she eventually gets will never be enough to satisfy what I think she should have done to her

throwing a baby face first into concrete seems like attempted manslaughter....even though manslaughter is when you accidentally kill someone, so you can't really attempt it.
greater punishment is needed

That's just terrible. I hope they take the baby away as well as her second baby when he/she is born in 3 months.
They could throw so many charges against her, I really hope they do something else other than battery...otherwise this proves that the law is just broken.

murder is like when you plan out how you're gonna kill somebody, or something. manslaughter is when it just kind of happens. like you swerve and run somebody over. I think this would fit more under manslaughter, since i don't think the purpose was the kill the baby, just a drug induced rage.

No Murder is just killing someone
First Degree Murder, also known as Premediated murder is when you plan to kill them.
Manslaugher is killing someone that is by accident

The article said she did it on purpose (from what her neighbors said) so it would be murder, not manslaughter. Probably not in the first degree but there are many levels of murder. Manslaughter is actually murder, but it's a low form of murder which in turns gives you a lesser sentence.
They could throw negligence into this too. Not sure why they charged the father though, they weren't very clear on what happened there besides the fact that he wasn't there.

There is a lot more in NY. We have 3 degrees of murder with 3 degress of manslaughter followed by mass and serial murderers.

Well what we were taught in law class was, if there is a problem a law is created, if it gets worse less or more can be added to the law.

Sounds like she needs a lot of help. Also no, she shouldn't have custody of her kids. Any of em. In fact the one insides her is already at risk. Drugs are bad, etc etc.
Kind of weird that the husband got charged with neglect but I guess if he knew she was all cracked out when he left her with the kid he should have known much much better.
Crackheads are not good parents guys.

she will get help in jail and after that she will most likely get her kid back unless the grandparents fight to remove her as a parent.
