A full guide to making your own unique mmorpg......................
Um. I don't think you're going to get that here. First off, you want to do it yourself?
Good luck. There's a reason they have giant teams of people working on video games, you know. And there is no way to give you a guide to make something like this. You need money, knowledge, equipment, time, ideas, and a great, hard-working team to pull it off.
If any of us were capable of giving you a full guide to making your own unique mmorpg, I think we'd be using it for ourselves, first. and not be a bunch of poor, starving gamers.
I don't think this is the right place to ask :) If you're even asking this question, I'm going to have to question if you have ANY programming, graphics, artistic, or musical talent or ability at all. Because I think most people in any of these fields would realize that what you are asking for is impossible.
Sorry, buddy.

I agree with muffin but I'll say that it's possible to create it by yourself. It'll probably take longer and you'll probably lose your mind after a while but it's possible. And with just a one man team, you probably won't see much popularity outside of your friends.
And if there was a guide to creating MMORPG's, I'm sure everyone would work on making an MMO.
First step is to have the idea of the type of game, characters, etc. Actualy Making the game (meaning designing and coding) is very far down the line.

to make text based Mmorpgs you have to know different coding languages which are not easy to learn, you have to know from the start what you want to do, how every small situation will play out.
Unless you have some training in some coding languages I wouldnt try to make one

Definitely. I don't think an MMORPG is a good place to start for a beginner game designer (which I am assuming you are, though I suppose I could be wrong).
If you want to get into game design, I suggest you start a bit simpler.

You guys shouldn't start working on a big project from the start. If you already have an RPG maker then work on a small project so that only you two can play and test. This is a great way to start off because you're not likely to get disappointed easily. If you start up with a big project from the go looking for instant success and you don't get it, it'll just serve as a big turn off.
So start small and then work your way into something big.

Build an online coop game first using an already existing game engine. I personally recommend using doom considering it has an online community and is really easy to map in. Learn the ACS and look at a few tutorials on mapping. Work your way up from straight shooter levels to adding small rpg elements and then try to make a full single player rpg, release it, wait for replies, and then if the replies were good then work on a coop version of that same rpg. It's not really an mmo but it'll let you get some ideas down.

I dont really know about the MMO field in particular, but you would need to know the requirements of syncing multiple players on one map, with little to no lag. These requirements are very different from what most open source game engines offer.
What you should start with is researching available open source engines, finding the most suitable and then learning to use the programming language and GUI/3d modeling program associated with it.
You want to decide right away before you begin weather to go 2D or 3D, first person or third, forth ect. you need to decide on the size of zones, organizing maps and dungeons/towns into instances or dealing with potential overcrowding.
You need graphical artist(s), preferably with a lot of programming experience. You need clear goals and to plan out stepping stones. Work on one thing at a time until you are comfortable with it, because attacking an entire project is impossible to do without loosing focus.
You need to test the game at every step and get a group of people with varied hardware to help you test the game. You need to log bugs and glitches and what hardware they appear with. Then you need to address those problems.
And this is just the basics. But good luck, if you want to be serious about tackling the idea of your own game, its a good idea to involve as many skilled people in the process as you can recruit. And then having solid goals are clear leadership.
Good luck.

most people who want to create video games go to school for that. Dont matter what software you get You will have to code it, and you have to know some language or another to do that.
Learning code isnt easy ive tried.
Also there isnt no "free" software you have to buy it, either with a starter book on how to code, or off a website.
