The U.S. Department of Justice on July 16 announced that federal health and law enforcement agencies have charged 94 people in four cities for their alleged participation in schemes to submit more than $251 million in fraudulent Medicare claims.

Attorney General Eric Holder told reporters at a press conference that in Miami, 24 defendants have been charged for their involvement in fraud claims of $103 million.

Arrests have also made in Baton Rouge, Brooklyn and Detroit.

What the criminals did is that they used some Medicare beneficiaries' ID numbers and filed false claims for the benefits.

Many Russian immigrants volunteered to get involved and in return they were paid to visit a non-existing clinic just to receive kickback payments, $50 to 100 for each visit, according to the AP.

The operation resulting in the massive persecution received assistance from more than 360 law enforcement agents from the FBI, HHS-Office of Inspector general, multiple Medicaid Fraud Control Units and other federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, Mr. Holder said.

Under Obama's Affordable Care Act, federal officials have the power to overhaul the system, which gives themselves authority to stop paying a provider if and when they suspect any claim is fraudulent.

Medicare.gov encourages beneficiaries to report any fraudulent activities.

Early in June 8, CMS.gov launched a $1 million fraud prevention education campaign. In the meantime, eligible seniors who have entered the Medicare Part D donut hole this year begin to receive a $250 tax free one time rebate check starting June 10.

In a document released in May 2010 from the Justice Department, the agency and the Department of Health and Human Services reported that "during Fiscal Year (FY) 2009, the Federal Government won or negotiated approximately $1.63 billion in judgments and settlements, and it attained additional administrative impositions in health care fraud cases and proceedings."

In addition, the report says "The Medicare Trust Fund received transfers of approximately $2.51 billion during this period as a result of these efforts, as well as those of preceding years, in addition to over $441 million in Federal Medicaid money similarly transferred separately to the Treasury as a result of these efforts. The HCFAC account has returned over $15.6 billion to the Medicare Trust Fund since the inception of the

They thought they wouldn't get caught? They probably wouldn't have if they weren't greedy enough to go after so much in claims.
