In protest of what it calls a religion "of the devil," a nondenominational church in Gainesville, Florida, plans to host an "International Burn a Quran Day" on the ninth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, attacks.

The Dove World Outreach Center says it is hosting the event to remember 9/11 victims and take a stand against Islam. With promotions on its website and Facebook page, it invites Christians to burn the Muslim holy book at the church from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

"We believe that Islam is of the devil, that it's causing billions of people to go to hell, it is a deceptive religion, it is a violent religion and that is proven many, many times," Pastor Terry Jones told CNN's Rick Sanchez earlier this week.

Jones wrote a book titled "Islam is of the Devil," and the church sells coffee mugs and shirts featuring the phrase.

Muslims and many other Christians -- including some evangelicals -- are fighting the initiative.

The church launched a YouTube channel to disseminate its messages.

"I mean ask yourself, have you ever really seen a really happy Muslim? As they're on the way to Mecca? As they gather together in the mosque on the floor? Does it look like a real religion of joy?" Jones asks in one of his YouTube posts.

"No, to me it looks like a religion of the devil."

The Islamic advocacy group Council on American-Islamic Relations called on Muslims and others to host "Share the Quran" dinners to educate the public during the monthlong fast of Ramadan beginning in August. In a news release, the group announced a campaign to give out 100,000 copies of the Quran to local, state and national leaders.

"American Muslims and other people of conscience should support positive educational efforts to prevent the spread of Islamophobia," said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper in the release.

The National Association of Evangelicals, the nation's largest umbrella evangelical group, issued a statement urging the church to cancel the event, warning it could cause worldwide tension between the two religions.

"The NAE calls on its members to cultivate relationships of trust and respect with our neighbors of other faiths. God created human beings in his image, and therefore all should be treated with dignity and respect," it said in the statement.

Dove's Facebook page, set up for the September event, has more than 1,600 fans.

"Eternal fire is the only destination the Quran can lead people to, so we want to put the Quran in it's [sic] place -- the fire!" the page says.

But another Facebook group with more than 3,100 fans says it stands "against the disrespect and intolerance that these people have for the Muslim people" and encourages people to report Dove's page to Facebook.

Targeting another group it calls "godless," the Dove center is also hosting a protest against Gainesville Mayor Craig Lowe, who is openly gay, on Monday at Gainesville's City Hall. The group previously fought -- unsuccessfully -- to derail Lowe's election campaign.

"We protest sexual perversion because the Bible protests it. ... What is acceptable to today's leadership becomes acceptable to tomorrow's society," the church says in its blog entry about the event.

Lowe and other government figures and media outlets received e-mails from the church about the event, The Gainesville Sun reported. Lowe isn't concerned with Monday's event.

"I've got other things to do," he said, The Sun reports.

On the outreach center's front lawn, alongside a sign reading "Aug. 2 Protest, No Homo Mayor, City Hall," stands not just one, but three signs bearing the slogan "Islam is of the Devil."

One of the signs -- one reading "Islam" on one side, "Devil" on the other -- was vandalized. On its blog last week, the church said the sign will be replaced.

"This is private property and vandalism is a crime here in America," the blog says. "In Islam, many actions that we consider to be crimes are encouraged, condoned or sheltered under Islamic teaching and practice, though. Another reason to burn a Quran."

Im not really sure how this will play out, but there most likely will be violence due to this. Im all for remembering people for 911 but sitting there saying someones religion wont get the job done, nor make the relations between us and them any better.

But oh well. Islam is actually interesting.

*sigh*

Things like this make me sick.

This is... insane. And I am sure that, at least on the Islamic side, they will be trying to avoid violence. These guys... seems like they might try to burn down some buildings or something, but let's hope not.

Ugh...

This line makes me laugh so hard. So much misguided hatred.

Wow. This is why the hate will never stop. By burning the Quran, they're assuming that the entire religion is bad which is pretty ignorant. Every group has their bad apples and assuming the entire thing is bad won't help anyone. Other religions (not just Islam) will probably frown upon this.

That part is just...

If only I had the chance to talk to him lol, I bet I could make him really angry with my "logic"

If they read just the 5 pillars of islam alone might help the situation.

Its not the normal muslim that is the problem its the extremist that believe in protecting their way of life at any cost is the true nature of their religion.

There are good muslims who would not burn a bible and there are good christians who would not burn a quran and those guys are not one of them :/
I know they they have caused a lot of trouble for a lot of people but that doesn't mean there all bad.

Is it bad that this sort of thing doesn't surprise me at all anymore?
I mean, I just did a 25 page research paper on hatred in religion and some of the things that came up in my research were appalling. This sort of thing happens so often but it's mostly kept out of the public eye. There is so much hate in religion right now, and so much misguided thinking, it's a wonder there isn't even more violence.

When people in places of religious power lack this much logic and knowledge, it's no wonder why people are acting this way... He seems to be forgetting the crusades and the inquisition...

My theory is that other religions are turning to the extremist view a little bit, not everyone is included in this, do you believe in god, no, /shun, do you believe in god, yes, do you believe in my god no, /shun.

Last time i checked didnt the bible pearch turn the other cheek? I can understand its 911 and we lost alot of good men and women that day from all walks of life but burning something holy to someone else doesnt fix the tension it just makes it worse to the point where someone is going to snap.

Im sure the terrorist wont be happy about this. Anytime you defile Islam they put a price on your head. IE Jihad Jane and Jamie. I think its Jamie..

Jihad jane was an extremist who tried to kill a cartoonist for drawing Muhammad on a dog's body. In Islam You are not allowed to draw anything related to Allah or Muhammad, its like a cardinal sin. Jihad Jamie was a different extremist who did the same thing went after a cartoonist, i believe the same one exactly.

As crude as it is, i think the best description for this is http://rob.nu/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/facepalm2.jpg

Seriously, this is the sort of thing that makes me want to smash my head into a wall repeatedly. These people... these extremists seem to have no common sense whatsoever. from what i can see, their train of thought is something like "Muslims killed people. All muslims are wrong and mislead. They are wrong because of the devil. We will show them the real god by burning their holy script. The devil will magically be repelled. They will thank us. We will all live happily ever after and go to heaven." ...because that's obviously right....

How about we put all extremists on an island somewhere and let them battle it out there for eternity. The rest of us could then get on with our lives.

I like how ignorant of the Christian religions background you have to be to say something like that. I expect as much from catholics, but now even the nondenominational sects want to be crazy. I like how Christians always have to be persecuting someone to further their goals rather then following the teaching of jesus. lols

But I also have to give props to the Muslims that promised violence if this event goes through. Way to show how much better you are.

Whoa, buddy, we don't need to attack Christians here, either o.o

And I hope, if it does happen, people don't respond with violence. I am certain that the majority of people will react nonviolently, or protest, or whatever, but there are always people who will get pissed off enough to do something extreme. Which of course would only make them look worse, even though this church is clearly provoking it :/

I dont mean to sound like I'm attacking everyone who is Christian, I grew up in a strongly Christian family. There are a lot of perfectly sane people in any religion.

I just feel they are overshadowed by the crazies who are always in the news. And its good to be honest and admit that there is some crazy stuff in both the bible and the Koran. They both teach violence and peace in stark contradiction of themselves. Crazy books attract crazy people.
