Alright so I came across this website Download Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer) and it seems pretty easy to install... but what the heck am I installing? Like I know its some OS ahah but like what's better about it and why should I install it? Im' scared I'll mess up my computer ;(
I know I'm a computer noob, that's why I'm asking you people for HELPPPP :-)

you probably don't want ubuntu... I'm just gonna tell you that outright XD
unless there's some reason that there are things you wish you could do that you can't seem to do because you are limited by the Windows operating system, I wouldn't recommend you go to the trouble of installing ubuntu and "making the move" to that OS. It'll likely end up more trouble than it's worth to you.
But, if you wanted to go ahead with it out of curiosity and to play with the new OS, you'd probably want to partition your drive to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows (in lieu of erasing windows completely and only having ubuntu.) Either way, you're going to have to get into the very involved process of backing up everything, reformatting/repartitioning your drive, reinstalling the OS(es), reinstalling all of your software/programs, deciding where/how to share/store data between the OSes if you dual boot...
If you were actually interested in installing it, I'm sure jaykub or linux (people who have actually used ubuntu, to my knowledge (I haven't)) could offer more insight than I :)

I promise it will be the best thing you ever do for your PC! Its just amazing.. I've not had anti-virus software in 2 years and I've never got a virus. I could go on and on about how great it is but its really something you have to try for yourself.
Good luck :3 I hope you try it.
Edit: Dili what do you mean? Its hard to install? I can install it in like 7 minutes >.>

Don't install it over your current OS, you'll lose everything. You should be able to burn it onto a cd and then run it on a separate partition of your hard drive.
But yeah...as dili pointed out, best way is to dual boot unless you don't mind losing your data.
And I'm not a big fan of Ubuntu...I prefer Fedora and CentOS over most other Linux OS.

is there a way to non-destructively resize NTFS and/or FAT-32 partions? I've never known there to be but if it were possible it would make installing an additional OS much less of an ordeal. Does Ubuntu require an additional swap space partition like some other (maybe older) Linux OSes? Does the installer automatically make that partition for you out of the one you let it use to install Ubuntu?

1. I'm sure there are ways to resize partitions with certain softwares, but I've never really tried doing it just to try it. I have a bunch of laptop hdd's lying around, I might try to find a way but probably won't have the time to explore it until Christmas break or something.
2. No swap space...not that I remember. Last Linux OS I installed was CentOS and it didn't require it but I created one any way for an online server. I also created other partitions such as /tmp.
3. I'm not sure of the newer ubuntu versions, I haven't used it in years but if it requires additional partitions for anything, and you don't have any space left in the primary partition (where you chose to install the OS) and there are no other empty partitions, then it should create the partition for you. It should tell you about it in the install as well.

Lolz you will not regret installing it tbh.
Listen to me carefully.
First, the safest way that I used to install Ubuntu on my computer is by installing the OS (Ubuntu) just like you're installing softwares. How so? Well, all you have to do is, just downloading the Ubuntu OS iso first, after that, download this Download | Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/windows-installer) Once you have download both stuff, now all you have to do is create a new folder on your desktop. Then put the iso file and the Windows-installer that you have downloaded to the new folder.
Then, all you have to do is just double click Windows-installer, then configure the option on your own. Don't worry about configuring the option cause it's a child play. Ask me if you still have problems.
And there you go, just follow all the simple instruction.
How to uninstall Ubuntu? Easy lol, just uninstall it just as you uninstall softwares on your computer by going to program and features on control panel, then search for Ubuntu.

Better yet, download VMWare Server (http://www.vmware.com/products/server/) and install it that way. This way you can run both at the same time if you are looking to just play with Ubuntu.

If god used a PC he'd use linux.
But not Ubuntu. Or use a GUI. He'd stick to plain old terminal.

He wouldn't use either....
He'd use a combination of ESP and telepathy to surf the interwebz. Plus Chuck Norris is his best friend and he already knows everything. :laugh1:
