In your own opinion, and it does not matter how many games you choose. What do you think are some of the best games when it comes to story telling?
Stories that made you care about the characters and always kept your attention.
There are plenty of games that involve simply shooting up an endless horde of enemies and blowing up vehicles, these dont always follow a specific story line.
In my opinion there are several games that come to mind...Heavy Rain is one of those games that really had me at the edge of my seat. I felt like i cared when someone got hurt or killed and the intensity of every situation really had me going. Another example is the Final Fantasy series, although some of the latest games were not the best...I must say that the story of the earlier games really kept my attention the whole time.

Good picks.
Good thread!
The first one that springs to mind has to be the Brothers In Arms franchise. I absolutely love WWII history, especially the U.S Airborne campaigns; the story line to these games are just so awesome, I love them. I am always really sad when a character I really like, dies :(

I would really have to say the Halo series. yes it's just a shoot 'em up blow 'em up game, but the actual back story and lil things are really interesting, along with he actual story it's self.
Same thing with the Elder Scrolls series, they all tell a long, interesting story.

Heavy Rain is easily the most engaging game I've ever played. I couldn't stand to watch when I messed up and one of the characters got hurt because of it, and the Lizard Trial I could not bare. I haven't met a game get you involved with the characters lives like Heavy Rain did, and I think it was the very touching first couple levels. The ending as well made me feel like a hero and great.

Engaging game? Uhhmmm... Probably Devil May Cry 4 for me, Nero's voice actor was the same one that did Ichigo's voice in Bleach. So that got me into it. If that's what you mean. :x

Halo, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Fallout.
It would be too much to explain why for every single one, they just have such good stories and mythos for all of the mentioned series, it's awesome.
Dark War 1556

I think that Assassins Creed series had a good storyline so did halo but id have to say that the game that got me in that way would absolutely have to be Masseffect

Dead Space - I'm impressed with how they took a simple SOS mission and made a long, in-depth story out of it.
And IMO the new NFS Hot Pursuit is a bit of a letdown, because of how it doesn't have a story linking everything together, unlike NFS Most Wanted which did have a story.

Is Dead Space a PC game?
Other than that I didn't like any of the NFS games since I didn't think any of them had a storyline. But so Most Wanted does?

It is indeed :)
It's also available on Xbox360 and PS3 if I'm not mistaken.

Oh, I was about to say "DAMMIT!!!" lol 'Cause I can't really play PC games on this total POS comp. >_< But maybe I could try it out on the PS3, it's got a pretty catchy name/ring to it. ^_^

My nominees(wrong spelled) are (drum please)
Bioshock= one word, Rapture.
Halo= the background story is just huge.
Bad company1/2 The story isnt the greatest but i love the squad.
Assasins creed= I love the story.
Bioware= All games they made have a great story.
Singularity= Many games have more story but this story is still kinda good.
And why not mention the duke that nukes them all.:p

Tetris. It's so moving. When I first played it I was like, omg, I really connect with this, it filled an 'L' space shape in my heart. I just love how much thought has gone into the narrative and play out of this game......
LOLZ JK
Dead Space easily. Gory, dark, shooter with something hidden inside. On my first play through I was amazed at the storyline and there was a twist I just wasn't expecting at all! I love all the little log's scattered about, with different parts of the story too. Hope the second one is just as good!

Tetris is also not my friend. I'm to impatient. I hate how slow they fall down, but at the same time, I hate how fast they fall when you force them to fall faster... Just can't win!

I haven't personally played it, myself, but I'm really surprised that Uncharted 2 hasn't been mentioned in this thread yet. I haven't played Heavy Rain, either, but I'm glad to see it getting its deserving mention from many of you, already ;)
I can't think of any games that I really enjoyed the storyline from :\ Mostly what comes to mind is Zelda games (A link to the past, mainly) and Metroid Prime. Oh - and adventure puzzle games:
Myst (and Riven but no other sequels - they got worse as time went on)
The Neverhood (amazingly done in painstaking frame by frame claymation!)
Zork (Hilarious game and story!)

Dragon Age: Origins
Metal Gear Solid series (1 and 3 have the best stories, 2 and 4 aren't bad but aren't nearly as good as 1 and 3)
Xenosaga
Silent Hill 2
Those games really just grabbed me and pulled me in and didn't let go story-wise.

I was wondering when someone was going to mention Dragon Age: Origins. The title itself is indicative of a dynamic storyline, after all.
I have to give a +1 to all the mentions of the Final Fantasy series; especially the earlier titles.
Oblivion has all the depth of lore and narrative that you could ask for, and in a non-linear package, no less.
I haven't played the latest Halo titles, but I was quite impressed with the depth of the story in Halo 2.

Legend of the Dragoon....need i explain
Rogue Galaxy in my opinion a more enjoyable version of FF with cell shading graphics.
Kindom Hearts idk why
Uncharted 2 was a power house transcending the globe.
I just wanted to have one from every PS consul (no psp)

Legend of the Dragoon....need i explain
as much as i love legend of dragoon, the plot gets kinda bland towards the end. it starts off realistic, but gets more and more convoluted as it goes on

I personally liked the story from the first Uncharted better.
It was far more original, where as the seconds was almost like a copy.

I didn't like it too much...to me it was like a copy of indiana jones. The whole set pieces of Uncharted 2 helped move the story idk i just enjoyed that one more.

idk...in all honesty compaired to FFVII (i was going to put that) in my opinion was more enjoyable and i was able to follow it alot more clearly... that just my opinion though

it was easier to follow, and imo a better game, but by the end with all the talk about magic and the divine tree and the moon and creator and stuff...disc 1 is my favorite cuz it's like a war instead of all this magic stuff. one of my favorite games lol. i'm just sayin, the story loses me towards the end but i still like playing it

I think I forgot to put Xenogears. It takes forever and a day to get all of their Deathblows but the storyline is pretty sweet, if confusing at times. Still, I liked it 'cause you really had to pay attention and think. Thankfully it was turn-based, otherwise I would've been totally annihilated. lol I forgot what kind of graphics they were (other than the anime-style FMVs). Sprites? My step-bro said what it was, but that was like 5 years ago. >_< :'(

Sweet!! I'd hold on to it if I were you though, it costs an arm and a leg to buy it again. -_- Plus I guess PS1 games are becoming rare these days, according to my step-bro. So, that might be a factor in the price too.

XD Maybe we should rob a bank? lol Then we'd be set for all the games we want! MUAHAHAHAHAAAHHH!!!! lol
Oh yea, another game with an engaging storyline(imo): Xenosaga. While the graphics are kinda... strange... I tried to focus more on the story than the way the characters and such looked. Even though the explosions and lighting effects during the cut-scenes(like beams and whatnot) were pretty sweet.

Dragon Age: Origins. OK, so the overall story might not me the most compelling in the world but I found the interaction with party members to be really engaging. Gradually getting more and more out of them, even developing 'relationships' with them.
They felt like real people with real emotions. More on that here! (http://train2game.wordpress.com/2010/07/08/all-train2game-students-should-appreciate-dragon-age-origins/)
(Actually felt bad when my female character had to turn down Alistair)

I tried Origins for a while, but learning something completely new and as extensive as that sort of made me give up on it. I still have it though... maybe I'll try playing it again once I finish watching my anime.
