I guess the paranoia of the hacker attacks has been making me question my security programs at the moment, i got 3 one antivirus, one firewall program and anti spyware.
I keep thinking that I need something more since i upgraded my antivirus up to pro version I had two firewalls running to try and protect my system even more.
more or less the fear of that hacker still is in my mind and im trying to figure out the best ways to mitigate any attacks on me, besides avoiding websites that are full of viruses.
im 99% sure its just my paranoia and fear of the hacker, but I rather just get some input.
programs im using are:
Avast - internet security pro verison.
Comodo firewall
Malwarebytes - pro version
I know a made a thread similar to this a few weeks ago, honestly Im kinda tired after my workout to locate it so im being lazy and creating a new thread.

get a router and block all ports?

lol I would get a router but its against school rules to have one in the room, i could be kicked out of school for it, no joke.

Oh yeah, I remember you mentioning it before.
Then switch to Linux and use that. Much harder to get through especially if you're using its firewall.
Other than that, just don't piss people off, a lot of hacking is just revenge. Some are just to show off. Not sure which is the case here, but it's good to eliminate one reason for someone to attack you.

no firewall
no antivirus
no antispyware
my desktop is protected by my router and my choice of operating system
my server is protected by choice of os, common sense (i.e. not making the sql port public, putting ssh/ftp on obscure ports), and denyhosts

Ive been thinking about going to linux always wanted to try my friend said he could install it for me but since he has no room on any external hard drives he can promise my data will be there when he installs and runs it etc etc
I wish i could use a router and protect myself, leica, but my school thinks it has it under control.

Nope he is still out there, according to my ras the admin put in place some more protection or what not to try and defend against attacks and trace the dude

Yes to all of that. I don't have an antivirus on my regular computer even though it uses XP because of my router and no ports are open on this pc anyway. Any open ports are on my linux server and the obvious ones are blocked and/or diverted (like ssh).
definitely a great method. My school's network has the default ssh and ftp ports and last year they got hacked about 10 times. I WONDER WHY. They still have that but they don't allow external connections anymore.

He can? Or can't promise that your data will be there? And if he could find a way to partition your hdd (there are ways), you don't have to worry about losing data because the process would take place on a separate part of the hard drive.
And schools never have anything under control. It's just a way of saying that they have no idea how to find the guy.

The university in my city requires that you register your network card's MAC address under your student ID number in order to DHCP. If your university does this, the obvious solution would be to set up a honeypot that logs all IPs that connect to it, then use the IP and time it was leased to find the MAC address, and thus identity, of whoever did it.

I have to agree with linux/leica, If you want to be protected better use linux. Over the past 3 years I've not gotten a virus and I don't use any antivirus protection.

You could always call CSI? Like, that dude from CSI Miami... he would just walk in, look around in a cool manner - slide off his shades... and then say something ultimately cheesy! Shortly after, he would find him, thus repeating cheesy saying.
