Prewords:

Now, Before i start please take anything written here with a pinch of salt, as i am in a slighty bad mood over beeing disapointed yet again by some incompetent team of gaming developers.
Im using this as an opportunity to blow off some steam, i usually dont rant like this. :P
Also, the examples set are compiled from different games and are only used here to make my point.

For those of you that will actually read this entire post. I welcome your comments and many of you will probably disagree to some degree with what im writing but as stated, pinch of salt guys, pinch of salt. ;)

This is for those that just can't be bothered.
TL DR: Im fed up by beeing exploited. From here on ill wait for proper reviews and videos containing actual gameplay.

Games, desecrated by incompletion and bad choices:

Some of you might relate to this actually, so here goes.

It's a nice and relaxing afternoon, You've had a great day with friends, family, your special woman/man and whatnot, and when you get home, a tad worn out. You feel like relaxing with a cup of your favorite beverage, some snacks, and that newest title that you and your fellow gamers have been anticipated for so long.
This game, (Whatever it might be this time) have had you drooling over its awesome trailers, and possibly some neat interviews with the developers talking about how much better this game is than any other.

You just bought this earlier today and have been itching to sit down and immerse yourself in what you thought could be the only way to top of a allready perfect day, so there you are, you slide the DVD(s) into your PC and commence installing it.
Minutes go by and after a while you click play, followed by some developer logos and most likely a fascinating intro to get your blood pumping and eagerly awaitng that "Campaign" button.

After a suspiciously short loading screen you start off in the character that you'll be playing during this adventure, allready at the start you get annoyed by the fact that whoever did the voice acting, apparently has had no idea of what setting his sentences are used in. Ignoring that fact you move on only to maimed down because of some bug causes you to get stuck in a barrel??!?!
WELL ALLRIGHT THEN!! a cursed reloading of the game puts you back in an unskippable ingame intro that you didn't like to begin with. By this time you are too frustrated to re immerse yourself in what was more or less promised to be a "adventure of a lifetime".

Barely bothering you continue, you get a little further having avoided the barrel of doom, and are getting ready to ambush your enemy (Of course you have to do this in the most disadvantageous place in the game instead of letting you choose yourself.) Despite the odds you successfully take out a battle tank, 2-3 armored escorts and a couple of dozen troops single handedly only to be rewarded by a crash to desktop and maby even a bluescreen if you are the lucky owner of windows vista.
By now, that play game icon on your desktop dosent even tempt you at all, leaving you to ignore the game. not wanting it to ruin your evening any further.

The next day you get word of a patch that has come out, you try it out only to find that the patchnotes are filled with fixed bugs you never even had time to experience yourself and adding to injury the major issues you encountered havent been toucehd at all.

You uninstall it, looking to get your money back you put it gently back in its case and return to the store only to get the following crappy excuse "Sorry, but you might have copied the serial key. so i cant take it back."
A couple of discussion filled minutes afterwards you leave the store with game still in hand and no refund.

Sounds Familiar?

Curse of the Serial key

Well, the way i see it they could have replaced that effin lousy serial key system a long time ago, so why havent they?

It might be because of just what they did, They mesmerize you with eye candy trailers that sometimes barely contain ingame footage or maby a series of short clips of doing something in the game that they had to use 30 minutes each and the help of developer tools just to set up to make it look good.
Followed by more or less branding the release date into your brain forever, just to make you go get it before the reviews can make you realise how many of the planned features have been removed and how crappy the gameplay actually is.

Because, as soon as you buy a PC game, the money you spent on it is gone, regardless of quality ONLY because it contains that damned cursed serial key.

Its clear that they are exploiting that, you often see developers bragging about how great the sales where for the game in the first week or so. but only the truly good ones can brag about continuously high sale rates over a longer period of time.

You also have the famous pre order sales trick where you are promised exclusive content (And by exclusive they mean they will wait to release it to everyone else a couple of months later.) Hell, sometimes they release it later on for free.

Im realizing that the serial key itself is a REALY bad system for us consumers. due to the fact that it prevents us from getting refunds, leaving the developers to just toss something together and then blind us with pretty words and video clips to get us to buy it before we realize how crappy it actually is.

THIS IS HOWEVER, not how i feel towards every developer.

The destruction of the great titles

And what the hell is up with ruining titles that have been great for many years and some for over an entire decade?

Sorry if i offend anyone by this, remember this is personal oppinion.
which is that the prequels of these series where much better than the piece'o's*** they're delivering now adays.

Age of empires: Ruined.
Red Alert: Ruined.
Tiberian series: Ruined.
GTA Series: Completely Ruined.
Call of duty: R-R-R-Ruuuined.

Next up i guess is the Halo series. (Some of you might consider this title ruined allready.)

Oh and btw: EA games, stay the hell away from my Fallout series!!!!!!

If they want to experiment, they can make a new title and not try to fix what isnt broken.
I where passionate about the prequels to these games, they where part of my childhood and i hate to see greed soiling the name of the series.
__________________________________________________ _________

Well then. that was a load of my chest :P

Now feel free to agree/disagree all you want, as said this is my personal oppinions and theories. if you feel the urge to enlighten me feel free to do so but if you want me to take you seriosuly, im gonna need more than just "You are wrong" :)

I read your hole message and have to say that I agree on most of the things here. You buy a game you think is awsome but turns out to be **** and you cant even return it to the store. I dont like cd-keyes but I rather have that then the crap that ubisoft came up with.(where you need to be on iternet just to play the game)

I can say that this happened when I bought age of empires 3. Ive only heard good things about the game and bought it and started it.

I can say that it wasnt a particulary bad game but it wasnt an age of empire game either.

I agree that the red alert serie, tiberium wars and age of empires are ruined(so far) but GTA.

They have changed but I still liked GTA4. (cant say anything about call of duty cause I dont have all and the same about halo)

Agreed on the solution that ubisoft tried out, but atleast they tried changing.

Sure, AoE 3 wasnt THAT bad, but as you said, it wasnt a proper "age of" game. so they could have changed the title and made sure that the age of title wasnt soiled by such a cheap sequel.

GTA is more an oppinion of setting they have used, i myself was getting sick of the wanna be urban badass gangster or whatever.
They changed the setting in red dead redemption (Which is in its core still a GTA game when it comes to game mechanics) and to be honest. That was a great decision by Rockstar.

Appriciate your views man. (Y)

P.S. Please edit your post and remove the quote, its so messy with such a large post, Thanks. :)

About age of empires 3 Ive heard that they wanted to change the title to something else but they wasnt allowed to do that from microsoft/EA or whoever released the game.

Talking about milk a title dry, you must mention Megaman and final fantasy.

final fantasy aint that bad because they change the games but megaman, Its practically the same game released 20 times over.

I agree with most of what you said. In all truth, most companies are greedy. The reason why new games of brilliant series are starting to suck is because companies can just put out a crappy, half-arsed game, name it as a sequel of a successful genre and call it a game.

One of the few companies that have made only good games is blizzard. Now I dont play wow but it was a really bold move to destroy the world and build up anotherone.

I dont think it is the companies itself which is the greediest, its the multinationel companies like EA and microsoft that often demand them to make games faster than possible.

Well the thing about Blizzard is that they have the resources to both develop and release their own games...
That beeing said i still think they could have put more into Starcraft 2 than renewed graphics and some extra units. However the Campaign was so great that they are forgiven. And im guessing that they are going to use the 2 upcoming expansions to release more units, maps, stuctures and tech, hopefully.

might I ask which games ruined GTA and COD

Well, sure. But as i said, my oppinion.

Vice, San andreas and the 4th one.
Got tired of the setting of the games, they used it up after GTA3, and then instead of waiting for a while before releasing the 4th one, they threw Vice and san andreas into the mix saying, "This one you can ride bicycles in!", "And this one you can swim in!".
By the time the 4th one came out i was sick of the entire GTA series. Which was a shame, because they finally had improoved the graphics.
I did buy it though, but i couldnt bring myself to complete it.
Same thing, different character.

CoD was "ruined" due to it isnt CoD anymore.
Was decent stories in them though, but i bought CoD and didnt get CoD.

But as i mentioned in the first post, I was in a bad mood and started ranting on and on :P Just had to get **** of my chest, Games are art to me, and when it doesent live up to my own standards. Im like, Meh.

Im usually much more open minded than what was showed in the OP though. :)

GTA vice city was accually my favourite, I love the spirit of the 80s and the scarface influences were nice. (But I hated the end so I got a minigun)

Well I can certanly understand your points when It comes to Call of Duty. I mean if you talk about the campaign. The campaigns in almost every former COD game has been awesome. But Black Ops really screwed up that feeling for me. The campaign was actually just one big explosion. That's so sad.

But if we are talking multiplayer, i gotta disagree, because COD:BO is one of the best online games i have ever played. Real quality FPS.

And I'm very interested in hearing why you think the GTA series is ruined, cause i've been playing every single GTA since back in the days, and I really enjoy GTA4. I think they took away alot of the freedom, yes, but they also improved so many other things.

The only thing I disagree with in your original post is the remark about GTA. GTA4 was an absolutely mind-blowing game, much better than any of the other GTA's i've played in the past. edit: okay, i didn't see your post about all the other GTA games being why you're sick of it. GTA4 is the first one i've played in full, but it certainly was fantastic. I don't see the others being anywhere near as good as that one, but i'm sure maybe it wouldn't be as good if you've been playing something similar over and over for the past few years.

Anyways, I agree with people getting lazy. Luckily, i've only ever experienced one major glitch in a game, and that was only because of a bad disc. My problem is that developers are making levels very streamlined and linear, and just disguising it with pretty graphics. The Force Unleashed and FF13 were both incredibly linear. An older game like Spyro, yes those were linear, but at least they were fun to go through, and you could do the levels in any order you wanted, as well as having bonus mini games throughout each level, and the overworlds are pretty open...Games these days just seem to have as little content as possible, and as much focus on graphics as they can. Especially in campaigns, they've gotten so short, and I don't really care for multiplayer.

First off I'd like to announce that I did infact read your entire post :) And I agree with pretty much everything you have said, in fact, I, the Emperor of Rants! Couldn't have written a better rant than this, IN FACT, it might top most of the ones I've done!

There's only 1 thing I might disagree with.

The serial key thing. It is not really the game devs that you should be pissed off at, it is the people that force them to be so careful and anxious about it, cause it is a matter of fact(I think), that its not the Game devs or stores etc. that exploit Serial keys. I would say, that it is actually select gamers themselves, who are too poor, or lazy, or just downright too rude, to go out and buy the game with a legal Serial key, so they forge one, or steal one, or buy one from E-bay etc. which means that they never paid for the game, they just cracked the game and typed in the serial key -.-

So I see where the game devs are coming from on this, I mean we all know that the main reason for it all is to earn money, but matter of fact, the gaming industry is the most passionate industry around right now, and normally, the game devs are gamers themselves, who know how gamers think, feel, and what they want. That obviously doesnt count for everyone, but it does count for some! So if you go in and try to get a refund on a game? It could be that the "Sorry but you cant prove that it isnt forged, no refund 4 u!" story, is there for a good reason, cause they HAVE infact had gamers come in before and want a refund cause they hated the game too, but they had a cracked version and had never paid for it at all. This can get the stores in BIG trouble with the game devs since they accepted to give money to someone who gave them a 'fake copy', so to protect their reputation and their business' well being, they're kinda forced to let you down :(

I've had this story before, infact it was about a Harry Potter game that was just horrible. I was told that the game might've been pirated, I couldnt prove it wasnt, and I threw a huge fit cause I had bought the game just days earlier!

As soon as I showed the receipt 3 hours later, though, I got my money back.

They can ***** and complain about it might be a fake serial key, bro, but your receipt is your weapon of mass destruction, and if you march up, slam that piece of smooth paper on the counter and say you want your damned money back, they can ***** all they want, YOU proved you bought it, THEY have your money, its RIGHT there on the paper, MODEL number, SERIAL number, EVERYTHING is there, its your copy, you bought it, your money, THEY'RE forced to give you your money if you ask for it.

So I'm not sure if you had the receipt or not, but if you did, and they still refused? They, as far as I know, just broke a law on your ass bro.

EDIT: And yeah, I agree, I USED TO LOVE CoD and AoE, I mean Age of Empires was a game that I made up GAMES about, like real life games, imagining I was a king etc. AoEII was that to me! I loved that game, and I'm having my copy shipped over in a few weeks, along with some Total War games etc.

CoD Was awesome in the beginning, the WWII versions were just fantastic, and then all of this stupid futuristic zombie **** came in and shot it all to hell.

Heh, yea i did this rant after i bought a couple of games and they all sucked. :P

But yea, i forgot the reciept the first time and i wrote this... then i got told that if i brought the reciept i would get my money back no matter what. :)

Anyways, after i had done that i was supposed to edit certain points of this posts but it would have made a couple of responses completely illogical so i didnt bother. :P

It was an old thread anyway... Untill you bumped it. xD

Of course it still pisses me off that the guy at the store "Must have forgotten to tell me."
about the reciept, as some colleague of the guy i bought it off said.
