View Full Version : 8.9 Magnitude Earthquake hits Japan

Holy crap :(
8.9 Magnitude earthquake hit Japan today, with tsunami like waves sweeping through the country, carrying cars, boats and other debris, some of it ablaze.
Most countries touching the pacific basin can expect tsunamis in roughly 7 hours, that goes for North Coast of New Zealand (feel so bad for them, especially after the quake..), California and all areas surrounding. The tsunami is said to be taller than most pacific island.. scary stuff.
Death toll and missing persons list is rising, literally by the minute.
The scenes are horrific. I'm watching footage of the waves flooding in, inland, chasing moving cars containing people trying to flee :(
If I was in one of those cars getting chased by the floods, I'd be ****ting my pants, seeing masses of water, boats and cars crashing towards me.

Im watching the news right now regarding it, its a mess, two mega quakes within two days is kinda weird, a few days ago was... 7.5 ish?

I know :(
I hope the tsunami doesn't hit New Zealand too hard, they've had enough after that quake in Christchurch!
I guess you can expect a lot more to happen around this time, the earth is going nuts. I predict volcanoes and more quakes.
This is basically how the world we know it will end, it won't blow up after something colliding with us, it will just be mother nature's destruction. The human race will have to start from scratch again!

Mother nature is a mystery situations like this there will never be a way to deal with it which is sad.
But if anyone is worried about getting hit by a tsunami wave here is a list of est times.

Nothing for New Zealand? I thought there was meant to be a tsunami hitting in roughly 6 hours on the north coast?

No idea, they have a new threat out Japan declared a Nuclear Emergency cooling fans are failing so if they overheat might have a melt down and ya... that stuff could come over to the US and screw with us.

I seen that :(
Bad news.
This is a map of where the tsunami will hit: http://bit.ly/fTDCTy

Me too :(
Kenya has now been put on the tsunami warning list now.
Tsunami is due to hit the west coast of America within the next hour and 30 minutes.
Hawaii tsunami close - coast line water has receded significantly, it's only a matter of time. Further out the water goes, the bigger the wave :(
Some guy was in Hawaii, on the coast, on the phone to CNN International, and he said there are lots of people still on the island, heading for the highest ground, but he said there were two people on the beach "observing" things! CRAZY!

Eventually, world will come back together in the form of Pangaea. Too bad it won't be in our lifetime.

You can say that again.. (don't say it again though)
I'm currently watching CNN to see if any of these tsunamis do much more damage to surrounding countries in the Pacific Basin.. Should have happened by now.
Hawaii got 7ft waves, but I'm not sure if there's been anything more yet, regardless though, these waves have caused damage to parts of Hawaii coast line.

The emergency level is still there but last I heard, they should be able to get everything to normal levels soon enough.

Yea I really feel bad for all those people... hopefully some day we will be able to detect earthquakes before they happen so people can get to safety...

This is so awful ._. One of the cities hit hardest was Sendai, which is where I visited when I went to Japan several years ago ._. I hope my host family made it out okay ._.
And apparently Santa Cruz (California) was hit with a tsunami... that's where I used to live @___@ So far away... This is so devastating. I hope Japan will be all right.

And 2, now I'm even more nervous for the rest of us...

i don't think that map is legit
according to abc news, a meltdown would only cause significant danger in a 25 km radius or so

Ah, ok. I mean I feel bad for them as well, but I was nervous this nuclear reactor was going to infect the whole world.
I feel terrible for Japan. They have a lot to come back from. :(

Indeed they do. Their economy and sources of power are screwed.. not to mention a lot of sources of food produce and factories.. it's crazy :(

Japan is said to be having problems with all 6 of its reactors. The damage would be beyond belief if all of them had a meltdown.

But Ive only heard about two reactors too.

three reactors lost their cooling systems.
two of them were in danger of melting down.
one is believed to have had a partial meltdown.
however japan's reactors are designed differently from chernobyl's and it wouldn't release that sort of cloud of radiation.

+1
Chernobyl released radiation which was roughly 90 times more lethal than the Hiroshima atomic bomb back in the 40s.. There's no way that the reactors in question will cause anywhere near as much devastation.

Plus Chernobyl went BOOM and had an explosion and not enough shielding for the public.

Japan made a new investigation and they found out that during the Friday's earthquake, it's actually not 8.9 but 9.0! I just struck. As far as I concern, 9.0 is the worst of the kind and the most ultimate one.

if anyone want to send aid you can find credible places to send donations. the red cross website and stuff:
American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/)
I still havent heard from some of the girls that where here last year studying. They might not have power or are conserving energy. Still makes me worry.

Hmm, from what ive heard there was a small explosion but due to shielding it wont get out the only way for radation to make to america is if the inner core where the HEU is at goes up in a big boom. Then it will come at us and we will be in trouble.

Like you say it will be in a very small number.
But still when chernobyl happend some radiation came into some swedish forests so the people was forbidden hunt and eat berries and other stuff. Even today they have to measure the rad in fishes and game.

But like europe its still across the pacific ocean(Im more concerned about japan, that island is small enough for so many people without contaminated zones.

That's crazy!
At least the Japanese, being awesome and clever and stuff, designed their reactors differently, so they won't explode as much as Chernobyl reactors did, and won't do as much damage in general.

Some experts here say that its already as worse as it were in chernobyl, that the japanese goverment is only covering the true damage up(at least what they say)
it was on the frontpage today in the newspaper.

Swedish nuclear expert: The accident should be classified as the worst on the scale
Fukushima is as serious as Chernobyl.
It says Frigyes Reisch, one of Sweden's leading experts on nuclear safety.
But in the seven INES scale is classified as an accident only four of the Japanese authorities.
- It says the result of economic interests. This is a seven, "said Reisch.
This is direct from the newspaper(its google translated)

Well then!
At the moment though, despite their being multiple blasts, the radiation level is still within legal limits.
