Well, im pissed off to say the least. >:(
Yesterday our government, with a 89 vote in favor against 80 votes decided to put DLD in effect (DLD stands for "data lagrings direktivet" which is directly translated to "Data storage directive")

This means that ALL telephone and internet activity performed by a norwegian citizen will be stored by our government for 6 months.
Needless to say people are pissed off. If this decision dosent get revoked soon, things may turn nasty.

Even what i am writing here will be stored by my government for 6 months... How ****ing great is that huh? >:(
Lots of debates going on around the internet wether this is actually legal.

That, as far as I know, is NOT legal by neither US nor EU standards.

Then again, I dont think Norway is a part of EU?

I was born and raised in Denmark, and I can tell you that such a thing would be completely unheard of! Whoever would be responsible would probably be put to jail for quite a damned while!

But no, storing personal/private information is a violation of a persons right to privacy, so there is NO debate there whatsoever. According to almost all countries on the globe, what Norway just did is quite illegal.

If they stored info without this, then it would have been illegal. They just legalized it.

I think more and more governments will move towards less privacy. The US has already been there for years with the PATRIOT ACT>

I think this is just horrible... Im actually considering just canceling my internet subscription alltogheter in defiance.
Just a god damn shame that we have made ourselves completely addicted to having phones in our life, or that would have been gone too. :|

I agree with Linux in this day and age governments are getting more and more scared because of all the crap going on around the world. theres been two riots, Egypt and Libya the government could be trying to look out for the welfare of its people or trying to protect its own interest and to put down any resistance before it begins.

Exenten do you know any reason why they would do this? Has something occured that scared them into passing this?

What i do know is that the bureaucrats in this country follows EU's directives like blind sheep even though we arent part of EU.
Also the police have been nagging that they need this to combat serious crimes and terrorism...

Yet another point in terrorism favor. ¤&¤%&#¤&% Politicians!

They need to learn their place. They are meant to rule on our behalf... Not rule US!!

When a country starts to follow EU's oppinions rather than its own people you just KNOW that a ****storm is brewing.

They have thought about doing the same thing here to. And a law that allowed the government to eavesdrop on all calls and messages that come from abroad:(

This is horrible news :(
I would already be planning a protest, because that is just ridiculous. If you have to legalise something to make it legal, in regards to holding private data, then it's obviously still morally wrong.. tards! Rise against!

Oh protests will come, But this has been a long time coming. Its been multiple polls and activists against this since the day it was mentioned, but most people was like: "Oh, but that will never go trough so it dosent matter what i do"...

Lazy ****s....

use an encrypted tunnel ;)

there's no way they have the resources to store every bit of information you transmit anyway, you're likely misinterpreting the bill

That depends on the amount of information. Storage has come a long way since punch cards.

Then again, you're probably right. Would be interesting to see what they have set up though.

What interests me even more is the thought that my post and all of our posts here might be stored in Norway because Exentenzed visited the thread - things could get really dirty if there were ever a multi-national investigation where clear evidence was found through Norway's DLD but US laws where someone were incarcerated wouldn't allow that as evidence even if that were the initial red flag that got them into trouble...

That kind of scenario is incredibly unlikely but I like the entertain the thought for fun/to tickle my noggin.

But, seriously - that sucks. I hope that gets turned around ASAP.

Oh but they would probably set it up outside of norway in a low cost land just to save a buck whilst at the same time show complete disregard for the safety of our personal information... i think i've read somewhere that an expert claimed a rough estimate for a system like this "as safe as it gets" will cost somewhere around NOK 2 bill (USD ~333 Million) While the cost our government published where around the NOK 230 millions mark.
(USD ~38 Million)

And regarding what gets stored, I think only we are affected as its the information our ISP retains we are surfing that gets sent to some location. (God, I dont even know where all my personal details gets sendt, nor whom is supposed to be guarding it.) O.o

Heh, in later news all the politicians that voted in favor of the directive are beeing attacked left and right by hackers, with the statement that "If we aren't allowed privacy, they won't be allowed privacy either."

Even so, many are pushing for a referendum (ballot proposition) on the matter.

I think supporting Norway in getting this overturned will be payment enough...
If it isnt stopped it will eventually get worse on a global scale.

The hackers call it "Operation Quisling" :P

This is who Quisling is if you don't know :) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vidkun_Quisling)
