It may not be similar in English but it is in other languages.

Latin is Jovis
Spanish is Jueves
Italian is Jovedi

And I think Thursday is old english for Thor's Day.

I know there is a clearer connection, can't think of it right now though.

Jupiter is obviously named after the god Jupiter from Roman mythology. Thursday has names similar to the name Jupiter (e.g. jueves) in many languages, particularly the Romance languages, because these languages were more closely connected to Roman mythology.

However, in Germanic mythology, that particular planet which we call Jupiter was connected to Thor instead, from where we get Thor's Day, or Thursday.

The etymologies are completely separate, it's kind of cheating to say that Thursday is derived from Jupiter, but hey, it's trivia.
