View Full Version : Your Opinion : FPS on Controller or Mouse?

I notice that there is a pretty heavy conflict among fps gamers between those who uses console controllers and those who uses PC/mouse.

Do you honestly think that using a mouse is the "cheating" way just because it is supposedly a lot easier?

I think it really depends on who is more comfortable with using what kind and shouldn't be brought into question. Any opinions? :cheesy:

I prefer controller, and no, the mouse isn't the ''cheating'' way, because in my opinion its a lot more hard to use a mouse apposed to using an actual console controller, they are basically the same, in a way.

I honestly suck at console controllers.. And some people have a lot to say about my gaming mouse. Oh well, and I have heard many arguments about this online. Very curious lol

Keyboard and mouse in my preferred method of control in just about all genres. It is 'easier', but I don't see why having more control is considered cheating, console FPS often have aim assist.

Plus, it allows me to play more tactically, for example, using a scoped assault rifle and making my shots count is much easier on PC than consoles, where I'd be more apt to take the run and gun approach.

I perfer mouse and keyboard on all games except racing(1) and flying games(2), where i would rather have steering wheel and pedals(1) or a joystick.(2)

I do not belive it is cheating to use mouse & keyboard, mostly because we cant play against those who use controllers on Consoles (Yes, people can get Xbox/PS controllers for PC but they are able to adjust the control sensetivity in a much greater way on PC than on consoles.)

I'd prefer a controller because I've used a controller all my life for almost all of my games. However I could probably get used to a mouse and keyboard eventually.

I prefer the controller for FPS.

I don't think that mouses are cheating, but you do have an upper advantage if you have a gaming mouse with keys on the side of it. You can switch weapons, keep moving, duck, and shoot away with no fingers leaving any keys, compared to someone with just a regular mouse.

I'd say console has more skill between players, as it's solely based on reflexes. Not that it's not skill on a mouse/PC, just some people have a slight advantage with gaming mice. Just like modded VS non-modded controllers for consoles. Slight upper advantage.

I depends on the game, on new vegas I use a controller, but not on F3.
On all STALKERs I use my mouse, for half of racing games I play I use mouse, for lego games I use a controller, all depends.

It's a lot easier to aim with a mouse, but I don't like using a keyboard and stuff. I'd rather have a controller, because the buttons are laid out to fit a comfortable holding position, instead of just flat buttons. I hate gaming in the dark on a keyboard too, i always hit the wrong buttons (i don't look at the keyboard while typing or anything, but i generally put my fingers in the wrong spot on the keyboard, so i try to type a sentence and it comes out completely wrong. (note, I tried to type something like that on purpose and I just couldn't oy esd trsllu eritf. ksu yjhrtr er ho i hoy iyz

I prefer a Controller for most games, but some games like RPG's I always use a Keyboard and Mouse, for FPS I always use a Controller its much easier to aim in my opinion.

I agree that using a mouse gives more control. But the ending factor is people are going to use what they have always used. If you started on a PC, your more likely to see better results from a mouse and keyboard setup, then again, if you've always used a game controller, then you will do better with such things. Then again, that isn't always the case but that's just my opinion. I have always been into consoles and am just now getting into PC gaming, so im still a bit choppy with the mouse, but i do agree that it gives a considerable amount of control vs what you would get with a controller.

The way I see it, if you're playing a game like World of Warcraft, Age of Empires, Diablo, etc, the mouse gives you a lot more options of what you can click and such, sure you could put all those games onto a console, but it wouldn't work as well. Then there's shooters, which is just better on console since the mouse is a more precise way to aim than an analog stick. However, games like Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, they're all easier on a controller I think, since you're only going to be pressing buttons and not really using the mouse, and I find the button layout on a controller easier than on a keyboard

Well im a pc gamer and i used to use k/m all time but i broke my wraist last year and now i cant play with k/m as the stress hurts my wrist.
So i had to adapt and started using a 360pad with fps on pc now i can hold my own against most players,
but even on max senstivity settings for 360pad its nowhere near as good as k/m sometimes ill come up against a player and he can just run circles round me as the analog stick cant keep up lol.
Also for black ops which i play alot on pc with 360 pad (k/d of 1.40 still :P) i find there aint enough buttons on controller i.e i cant lean and no way to bind it either.

So imo k/m if you can
Anyway thats enough a ramble from me.

I don't know what the hell I'd do if I couldn't use a k/m for PC FPS games... well I do know, I'd do the same as you have done... but you know what I mean! I would be devastated.

Every time I use a PS3/360 pad for FPS games it just feels like I'm operating crane controls. If I was going to use a pad for an FPS game then I'd have to get something like the 360 Tournament pad, which allows you to trim the analogue stick sensitivity to whatever feels comfortable. But even so, there will be certain restrictions.

I personally almost always prefer controller except in a few games, like Civ, or Sims, or Minecraft. Stuff like that needs to have a mouse, but for FPS games, I will always prefer controller over mouse/keypad.

I agree totally, I've always been using controllers, its just a lot easier that way. And its ridiculous hard to navigate via. Keyboard and Mouse. I guess its just because im overly used to using consoles for gaming in general.

if you are used to keyboard mouse combo playing with a controller mostly feel bad, if you play with controller all the time playing with mouse and keyboard feels bad.

It is just a matter of getting used to it, if you play with mouse long enough you will soon feel more natural using it.

I myself have very fast reaction time when I play and use only small mouse movements.

its strange to hear people say that FPS is better on a controller for them.. :) If I ever played COD or F.E.A.R on a controller, even a rat will kick my ass lol! I really should practice and give it a try.. For now, my gaming mouse is my hero (esp for fps)!

I personally prefer a mouse. I dont think either is 'more easy', it's just what you as a person are more comfortable with. They both have advantages and disadvantages. I tend to be more a PC gamer so the mouse is second nature to me. However, Im finding the more I use a controller for FPS's, the more comfortable it is- almost to a point where it doesnt make a difference to me.

I prefer to use a controller but i have played with a mouse, I use a Track ball when i play on my PC and i think its slightly easier if you get use to it since you can spin the camera around faster without cranking up the sensitivity and it just seems like more control over the camera with my track ball then with my controller.

I find that very impressive! I cant work a mouse with a track ball to save my life no matter how many times I try :P

I feel the same way about using PS3/360 controllers for FPS games. It just doesn't feel as natural as it does with a k/m. That is one of the reasons I think that first person shooters are meant to be PC games.
I prefer PS3/360 controllers only for fighting (although keyboard feels just as comfortable) and some sports games (which I rarely play).

NOTE: I always stick with the classical k/m layout. I never use expensive "Ultimate Gaming" mouses with a bunch of unnecessary features. I prefer the k/m just the way they are.

EDIT: I can't say "mice" when talking about the computer mouse, can I? :P

Any Pc oriented game, using a controller is just wrong.

Mizel

Kind of defeats the purpose of playing on a PC lol However, the only time I ever wanted a controller while playing a PC game was when I was playing Fable 3 because the controls are def made for a 360 and it shows.

^ Some games just feel a lot better with a controller. Like, Demon's Souls' controls are perfect, I don't see how they could be improved at all with KB&M, probably would feel less fluid actually.

PC wins 99% of the time though :P

For FPS I prefer mouse and keyboard. I think the only reason it might be considered "cheating" is for people who only have a 3-button mouse. I don't think it's cheating though, it just makes things easier. *shrug* For almost every other genre, I prefer a controller.

hmm. they are selling controllers that are USB for computers these days.... I dont know though if its considered 'cheating' would you find it convenient? well.... if you're comfortable with the mouse & REALLY accurate with the games you're playing, then I'd recommend that... I no longer can do FPS's with a mouse.. its difficult for me. so I'd stick with a controller.

Mizel
09-29-2011, 09:43 AM
I honestly just think using a mouse/keyboard is straight up easier then using a controller, for me personally. I think that is why people say it's cheating..... however most of the people that say 'it's cheating' are all strictly console gamers, not PC- from my experience at least. And those are the same people that say PC FPS's aren't real FPS's. *rolls eyes* It's not cheating, it's just different. Overall the whole argument is ridiculous. What it comes down to is what youre more comfortable with, and of course what is more comfortable to you is easier.

As for USB controllers? I think everyone should use whatever they prefer. What I dont understand is.... if youre going to get a USB controller, why are you even PC gaming? lol If you prefer a controller- get a friggin console >_<

It really depends on what the game is made for. Normally if it is based for PC, then transfered to console, then the mouse is normally better. Vise versa also.

I enjoy using a mouse and keyboard for fps though, A lot more control then using a little joystick. You can be way more precise and accurate with a mouse. I think the using a controller on a shooter for a PC when others are using a mouse is a disadvantage. If you can control a mouse and a control well, I can guarantee that you will have a faster reaction time with a mouse.

The advantage of using a mouse is that you get to control it with your whole wrist. If you have 2 experienced player one with mouse and one with controller, the one with the mouse will win always. You have a much faster movement, you can do a 360 turn many times faster than you can with a controller. you can also follow a target much easier when sniping and shooting fast guns. I play with both and i prefer mouse always. However i am mostly an Xbox person.... If only we could connect the mouse and keyboard to our Xbox things would just be awesome.

For a more competitive edge, the mouse. For a more theatrical play through, the controller.

I would definitely have to say mouse and keyboard. Especially if its a trackball mouse. You think regular mice are cheap? Imagine 360 degrees of movement without having to move your arm. ;)

I prefer a controller. There are only a few games I like to play with a mouse or keyboard for FPS or any other game. But yeah, controllers just feel right, like the triggers on the Xbox controllers, it almost feels as if it s real trigger on a gun, ha. I don't know, thats the way I see it. Also like someone said before, the button layout is nice and easy to memorize and all that good stuff, as where on a keyboard you have many different buttons you have to use and you just get all confused and start pressing wrong buttons. Unless you have to use a mouse, which makes it a little more easier. Like in Diablo, The Sims, Dungeon Siege, you only use a few select buttons and the mouse mostly. I also think, for me, it just depends on the game. But yeah, controllers for the win!

Controller is great but you must get used to it first ;P. And for some people it can take some time :P. I'm playing only on my mouse and keyboard but I heard that Razer Nostromo is a great gaming controller for PC. It's very handy and has a lot of possibilities. For eg. if you have a Razer Nostromo and Razer Naga you can have about 70+ keys only on your mouse using Nostromo modifiers. It's great way to play MMORPG. But for games like Fable, Fifa or other games that are released also on gaming consoles I recommend using a normal controller like in Xbox 360 or PS2/3.

Since theres a big discussion about mouse and keyboard i was woundering how come games dont take advantage of the xbox 360 Gamepad. you know the little keyboard you buy. i have seen Fortress craft use it so it could easly be used.

For example ( nd this is an easy one) for game like oblivion ( or any RPG with spells) instead of using a weel you can use the 1-9 buttons you know like on the computer....... I woundered why they dont atke advantage of that little keyboard they have there. So many buttons that while on a FPS may not be handy, on RPG can be the 2nd best thing out there ( keyboard being first)

CraeSC111
10-28-2011, 08:09 PM
Diefer there's an easy answer to that. I doubt more than 50% of gamers use that game pad and you wouldn't want to make it a requirement to play because people don't like buying extra stuff. Plus the devs probably don't want to waste time and money programming it in when you could just stick with the wheel
