View Full Version : What Foreign Languages Do You Know? / Want to Learn?
Well the title is pretty straight forward.
What foreign languages do you want to learn?
What foreign languages do you already know?
How did you learn it?
What troubles did you have etc etc..
---
I would like to learn...any language. I have just not built up enough...commitment to do it yet. :(

I've been slowly self-teaching myself the sentence and grammar structure of the Japanese language. I watch a lot of anime in Japanese to help me get the dialect and how certain phrases are used in conversations. It's really hard but I do plan on getting a degree in Eastern languages so one day I can spend a great deal of my life learning about the history of the Orient and Far East. I've got a Japanese-English Dictionary and a book titled Japanese Demystified. One day I'll be fluent.. one day..

I speak English (;D), American Sign Language, Japanese (been familiar with the language for a long time, went to Japan in high school, took courses in college - miserable with kanji, though. Can read katakana/hiragana and speak it somewhat conversationally), and some German (also took courses in college while I was dating a guy who spoke fluent German). I also took a year of Spanish in middle school, and my best friend is Mexican so I know a little bit :P
I love languages. There are SO many I wish I could learn, and I need to learn the ones I am already learning more fluently... so many things to do ._. I can't decide what I'd like to learn next, though ;_; There are so many fascinating languages and cultures... I really, really love language.

Went to Japan?? T.T So lucky.. I can only imagine what it was like.. it's been something I've wanted to do since I knew the island existed. Kanji is really the whole reason I want to learn Japanese is just to write in their language. It's beyond beautiful but equally complex.

Well I mean, technically kanji isn't even Japanese so it's not really their language and hiragana/katakana are, but ;P
And yeah. It was really, really fun :3

I took 4 years of Spanish in High School. I remember most of what I learned and could probably get by in a Spanish speaking country well enough (would have to ask them to speak a bit slower probably :P).. I haven't spoken it or anything in a couple years though, and thinking about it now, I don't remember all the rules of conjugation so I would probably sound retarded as well.

Just curious, which language do you think in? I'm wondering because you said English has surpassed both your first and second languages and I'd find it very interesting if it replaced either as your 'thinking language' as well. (also, that's an impressive list :O)

So where does Kanji originate? Is it Chinese? I know, or at least think I do, that the Japanese took the Chinese's form of writing and eventually made their own version. I still am shady on the history but I know Mandarin and Cantonese is Chinese main two languages but still am in the dark as to how the Japanese made theirs from the mainland. Maybe I should spend more time study about this than playing games? lmao ;P But really though, the books I got don't go into much detail as the hiragana and katakana writings of the language but it's good to know now that Kanji isn't Japanese. ^^

Just thinking that.
I know English, and took French in school for 4 years. Can't speak it, but can pick up on enough keywords to know what a conversation is about, as long as they're not talking too fast.
Would love to learn French fluently, and also maybe learn Low-German. Have a few friends here that speak it, learning from when they were young, and it'd be cool to learn. Thinking about getting the Rosetta Stone thing, if it actually works.

The only language I am fluent in is English. But I know enough in Farsi, Dari, Poshtu, German, Russian, and Spanish.
The first 3 are because of Afghanistan. I took classes in German and Spanish and I only know Russian because of a couple of Russians I worked with. ( I know enough in all those languages to get me by if I was to visit.)
The troubles with the first 3 was I was learning them all at the same time so I would get mixed up alot. But my Afghani friend really helped me out alot with (Dari) then on a mission we were around Farsi speaking police officers so they helped us. And Poshtu I forgot who helped I think the terp helped because that was his language. Once you learn it though, there are very few differences. If you know one you can get by without knowing the others.
I would love to learn more German... I heard Rosseta Stone is an amazing program it is just very very costly!

And to top it off, after you learn all you need from Rosetta Stone and paid tons of money to get the high-level courses, you don't even get a college degree. lol

Awe you can easily google it. LOL It is Suka pronounced Sue-Kuh. Now you can just randomly say it when someone is being a B*tch. Which is always fun!
