View Full Version : Better RPG than WOW?

After playing wow for a couple years i can't help but notice it has become way to dumb down..... There is no challenge anymore. It is like the game is set to let you win...... Whats the fun in that?

Anyways

What i am getting to is, is there any other game that is similar to wow ( i love their system) but more challenging?

The levelling system is dumbed down a lot since Vanilla, but it's only to get players to 85. After that, battlegrounds have been dumbed down a bit too and simplified. I miss 1-4 hour AV struggles. There's still a ton of challenge in the raiding though. You should get in on it before you totally give up on WoW.

There's not a lot of games that can really compare, though. Guild Wars is supposed to be great, and Guild Wars 2 coming out (soon if it isn't already) is supposed to be even greater. I haven't had any luck in any free to play games, they all feel like a cheap version of WoW. The only free WoW "clone" I haven't tried though is Runes of Magic, which actually looks pretty good. Give that one a shot.

There are plenty of RPGs better than WoW, but similar and better? Hmm, I dunno. I think WoW is pretty much the best at what it does.

It's not too similar but as Bryce said you could try Guild Wars 2 when it comes out.. it's looking awesome, and you'll only have to pay once; You buy the game and that's it, no subscription fees.

I myself think rift is a pretty cool game. Only played the trial version but it seemed to be more in depth with some features and made playing with other people really easy. The common zone events were always super fun to join in. I played guild wars for a month or two then lost interest. It seemed like a flashier less involving WoW. Dungeons and dragons online is a really fun one. The abilities for all of the fighters are kind of useless and if you're tanking you're pretty much unkillable, but the style is nicer in my opinion and its free (well the free stuff at least).

I couldn't agree with you more. I also played for years and just quit recently because of how much they've dumbed it down. Its very obvious they are now in it soley for money and attempting very hard to cater to casual gamers, which is reallyyyy frustrating. They've redone everything about the game that made it challenging. You now no longer have to use you're brain to plan your character out, you just pop points in and that's that. Makes me a sad panda :(

As for other games *like* WoW... the closest I know of is RIFT. Which is pretty fun... or you could go old school and try some Diablo 2 xD

I did play World of Warcraft before but the one that are closest of that game is Rift, Runes of Magic & Aion.
But my opionen it's not my type of games, I prefer more anime style looking games like Dragon Nest, Lucent Heart, Lime Odyssey (Similiar to RO).
But of course there is many more games I'm looking forward like Diable III, Guild Wars 2, Tera Online & Blade & Soul

It's going to take a while till Blade & Soul going to be release since the korean version have not been in open beta yet

You can always try Conquer Online. Its kinda like Wow, just not all that advanced in graphics, but its still pretty awesome.

Conquer Online sucks and it doesn't look like World of Warcraft at all, better wait for Diablo III lol

I'm not sure that anyone on the forum really plays Everquest anymore, nor am I sure that I know if many of the members here actually played it earlier, either. I may be wrong, though, I don't frequent the forum as much as I used to.

This about sums up the thread's suggestions in the briefest way possible... there's your answer!

I think I still have the original Everquest laying around the house somewhere. Never got it out, was never interested, don't care enough to look. I've heard from some people that its really fun and from others that it sucks. You probably wouldn't be able to get any good gameplay outta it because its largely a team oriented game and no one plays :).

If u mean Online RPGs, Lord of the Rings Online is great... Its F2P but you get more out of it if you go VIP (£5 a month)

I like the way it has a story to it, and the depth of the world, alot of my kin mates came from WoW to Lotro

=)

I've heard LotRO is a really good one. Haven't tried it yet. Quit WoW a few months ago and don't care to start up games like that for a while.

I thought the challenge was still there it's just all late game raids. The fights are a lot harder than before, they made level easier though. That was always boring to me anyway, so I thought it was fine. I got bored of WoW too though, just gets old after a while.

Anyway, I would say no, you won't find much gameplay/story better than WoW.

GW2 would be your best choice probably.

if you want a difficult game, I always thought Final Fantasy 11 was really good. A lot more different choices in your character, completely different game play, it gives a new feel to an RPG. I don't really remember the late game since it has been so long ago. But the leveling system is completely different. In WoW it's almost all quest, but in FF it's hard to solo mobs that are the same level as you, you normally can't unless you have an OP class or items. From level 10 or 11 and on you level up all in parties, kind of like dungeons, except there really isn't any bosses, it's just regular mobs and you normally sit in one location and have someone with a thrown weapon pull back to you. Like I said completely different gameplay and it's nothing like other FF games, this once is online only not turn based or anything. Check it out if you're interested. Just be prepared to buy about 6 expansions.

There's been rumours since before the WoW release for it lol. I've heard more evidence on it and speculation and blah blah rumour mill yet again, but I don't think there's any serious work put into it as of yet.

Yea lol They've been talking about for ages but last I heard they squashed the idea... would still be awesome though :P

CraeSC111

The Starcraft: Ghost idea is what was squashed. They were gonna make it but then Warcraft stole Starcraft's hype and they slashed Ghost. I wanted to cry when I heard that the game I wanted the most had be cut from Blizzards production list. But I am happy for Starcraft 2 :D

There are a lot....I kind of liked DnD RPGs better than WoW...like Neverwinter Nights, Temple of Elemental Evil, Baldur's Gate....the stories in them were pretty neat.

As for MMORPGs that are better than WoW....I dunno...I don't think there are any yet...WoW was just HUGE for an MMORPG.

Have you tried the DnD MMORPG? Its pretty fun, but you need good people to play with.

For the gameplay and feel of WoW I can't of the top of my head think. But I completely agree that it has been over simplified. They have made the game to easy now because of gimp's that either can't or are to lazy to play the game as it was. It wasn't diffecut to play at a standard level, but it took more than 2 weeks to get anything donae and that what idiots didn't like. So instead of tailoring the game to people who wanted to get somewhere by work and skill they savaged the game in order to please the moron few!

Sad times (and I fear only to get worse)

I totally agree, in every way. :) WoW was an amazing game in just about aspect…. but they’ve taken away everything you used to need to work for and put thought into, just to appeal to the casual gamers. I get no more satisfaction from it anymore, and it sucks because imo there isn’t a game right now that compares. :( I do still hope that someday another MMO just as good will come out!

You mean MMO games with an end game that requires teamwork and skill? Probably not. However your best bet is to try more recent MMO games that still have a base of hardcore players. One that has not yet had time to stagnate and then desperately try to compensate, hoping to increase its user base by appealing to all ages. (or just the more casual crowd)

I liked Rift a lot, and Im going to be playing some Old Republic.

Star Wars The Old Republic. At least, its something other than WoW that is popular. Or DC universe.
