View Full Version : Sony Threatened by Anonymous over their support of SOPA (PLEASE READ!)

The year 2011 has been a terrible year for Japanese electronics company, Sony, after having targeted by a worldwide group of hackers known as "Anonymous" in April. Hundreds of millions were lost from the company's revenues; some of its operations were halted, millions were spent to improve security of its networks, customers were lost, retention promotions needed millions just to attract customers old and new alike.
http://gamerspaper.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/Sony-PlayStation-Network.jpg
The hacking incident started when Sony sued few people responsible for hacking its systems including PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PlayStation 3 (PS3).
Just two days ago, the same group posted a warning video on YouTube threatening Sony of the possible attack which may take place any day from now after the company aired its support for Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) in an attempt to minimize piracy in the cyberspace.
In the video posted by Anonymous, the group is determined to bring "death warrant to Sony Company and Associates," and to destroy its network so as to delete its presence online.
http://gamerspaper.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/anonymous-hackers.jpg
According to the group, Sony’s "act will halt online businesses and restrict access to many sites for many users. Supporting SOPA is like trying to throw an entire company from off a bridge."
After an attack in April, Sony for sure has taken strict measures to intensify its security against future attacks. In fact, that was one of the things Sony promised to the people just to attract more customers. Now, if Anonymous pursues its attack, Sony's expenses in making its networks secure would be tested to its farthest extent.
Celebrities who also supported SOPA will also experience the same wrath Sony will receive, said the video. Among these celebrities are Justin Beiber, Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian.
To intensify the threat, the group pointed out some of the government agencies which suffered from its attack in the past, namely: The United States Department of Defense, The Bank of America, The United Nations, and Lockheed Martin.
Here is the video uploaded by Anonymous:

Sorry to disappoint Sony fans but I definitely will not support SOPA. It's one of the worst bills that was ever considered. IMO, those people who actually supports SOPA aren't thinking straight. Of course, piracy isn't a good thing but restriction people in the internet is by far the worst idea ever. Restricting internet will kill the entire online industry and people will live backwards. What happened to technology and our modern life?
Yeah, it sure helps protect IP (Intellectual Property), but by killing millions of users on the internet.

Eugh so disappointed in all the companies and people that support SOPA.
Marvels one of them and THAT breaks my heart. DC/Time Warner too.
DEATH TO SOPA

I dont blame companies for supporting it lol You'd be pissed off if you made a game/movie/book whatever that people just stole from the internet instead of buying. However, I do think SOPA is taking it wayyyyy too far.

I wouldn't because I know how it works haha

Lol Well yea, true xD Just trying to think of things from their perspectives haha Although overall… if SOPA passes, no ones going to want to even use the internet… which means businesses fail, and a snowball effect from there. I think the negative results will def outweigh any positive ones.

Nah, I don't usually do a copy/paste except for this one. I simply wanted people to read about it hence the copy/paste.
And honestly, whether or not people are stealing or piracy's everywhere, it's not the way to work things out. Heck, they should be coming up with a proper solution. That's why people even voted for them to be in power.
I seriously hope to see a bigger list of huge companies going against SOPA. Marvel was a true disappointment..

Exactly the point! IMO, I would rather slowly get these people who distribute pirated stuffs rather than having nothing for my business at all. I mean, what's the point of passing SOPA if it's going to make your business get from bad to worse?

Hacking the sites will only make it worse, and I understand why they are doing the "SOPA" thing because piracy IS a big problem. But SOPA is way to harsch, and bad.
But if you think piracy is not a big problem read this (its only estimations however)
The Witcher 2 pirated 4.5 million times, reckons CD Projekt Eurogamer.net (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-11-29-the-witcher-2-pirated-4-5-million-times-reckons-cd-projekt)

Everyone knows piracy is really a huge problem but SOPA, isn't a solution. It's a bigger problem than piracy.

Nope, I agree SOPA is garbage however everyone should do as CD project, give the "real" buyers extra stuff like the soundtrack and the making of as well as extras.

Sony was probably like "awh man, not these guys again."
Decided to back out before they had to spend even more money because of anon's attacks.

It should be noted that all of the companies are still part of the ESA, which fully supports SOPA.

I was just waiting for Anonymous to get involved in this SOPA thing.
I'm ashamed to be American, this bill is seriously uninformed and most people supporting and writing it have NO idea how the internet works. This bill will allow major companies to monopolize essentially everything by controlling ads put up by smaller competition.

I pay for a subscription to Zune the only time I pirate music is when Zune doesn't have what I want (or I really want to keep that song which is not often). I have never pirated software, that I didn't own(Games are pc and it has only been roller coaster tycoon because I lost it but I found it so hey!). Put I pirate ebooks like it is going out of style. Microsoft tries to ban console who flash or whatever but you just cannot stop everyone. Instead of taking it out on everyone. It is best to take it out on websites like bearshare or piratebay. And anyone who uses them. But seeing as piratebay is not in the united states (I think I read that) this does not apply to them. I don't fully agree with them, and think that it could be handled better then SOPA.

SOPA would still apply to pirate bay because the government would make ISPs stop allowing access to that site. I wouldn't say the issue against this law isn't so much as pirating as it is censorship.

I think you underestimate nerds when they are forced to "defend" their way of living. Just think of this, they have been sitting all the time fueling their bodies with snacks and energy drinks. When IT happens all the dormant energy stored in their bodies will rise by the rage of PIPA, and soon we will have a whole lot of raging running nerds fueled by an energy source thats been built up over the years of nerding.

The people who wrote these bills know exactly what they would do if passed. It's all about control, they don't like that there is free reign on the internet because they can't stop certain things from happening. They want to censor things because it limits communication and allows us to be easily controlled.
On the issue of Piracy, it can't be stopped. It's been around since... um who remembers a time without it? No one! Deal with it. The companies should be using this to their advantage. The people who buy stuff will buy stuff, the ones who can't afford it will pirate it. So what? It makes it easier to get out a message. When people start out all they want to do is be seen and now that they're making millions, they want to limit their reach? It should be taken as an honor that your things are being pirated, Newsflash: It means that the stuff is good enough to pirate. What were pirates looking for... Treasure. They should be complimented that their products are part of that treasure. If they're worried about making money then they should focus on making quality products. The more people that see their stuff, the more people that can endorse it and say if it's good or bad. Word of mouth is the most powerful thing when it comes to business so why should they be worried about not getting paid before their product is seen unless it is not something of value.
Critics get to see movies and test products without paying for them but they can be greased up to write a good review. The general public of which contain these pirates are real critics that give real reviews and the people who are scared of that shouldn't be in business.
That was a little off subject but linking back to SOPA.
The government can be exposed through the internet which is why they want to control it. What they are trying to stop from being exposed could be a number of things but really who knows?

I like all the things I've seen that Gabe Newell (Valve/Steam) has said about piracy. Here's one quote:
“The easiest way to stop piracy is not by putting antipiracy technology to work. It’s by giving those people a service that’s better than what they’re receiving from the pirates.”
from this article (http://www.gamefront.com/gabe-newell-piracy-is-a-non-issue/)
I enjoyed the article, as well.

That is exactly what CD project also think, give the buyers better service and extra things.
And that is why I love CD project(Also that they make good games :p).
Its fun that the people that say that in muffinspost is the people of steam, the most used antipiracy technology, amongst other things :P

That is exactly what I think about piracy. It has been my experience where there are old games that you cant easily buy anymore the best thing to do is to find them elsewhere. not that I've done this *cough cough*. Also I don't like watching television on a TV so I use netflix, but not everything is on netflix and you cant find it elsewhere....

Yeah I'm not sure why the movie business hasn't tried to do something like this... I bet they would make a ton more money if they had a service where you could watch movies coming out in theaters (or maybe a little later, if they don't want to cut into those profits) online for like $5 or something. Basically like Netflix, but with more selection. They need to embrace how the world is changing, instead of trying to force it into what it used to be :/
Netflix takes forever to get movies (or at least used to back when I used it more often).
