Consider me painted green.

What do I need to know before getting into this game?

Who. What. When. Where. Why. How.

I know that you make stuff with blocks. And I want to make stuff with blocks, lol. But do I buy the game and then create my own game with a friend or my wife?

How does this all work?

GF has there own server that everyone plays on, you could always use that along with your family and friends where everyone plays on the same world.

If you want a more private server that you only want friends and family to play on, you could always run a server off you're computer. Takes about 5 minutes to set up and doesn't take much to run. I have 3 gigs of ram and I was running a server for 3 people with no lag. I had to direct more RAM to my java, but all was good.

You could always do both as well, there is also a single player option as well where you have your own world to play. The map keeps expanding as you walk out farther, so it's an endless world, never gets to cramped.

Minecraft is literally what you make it. There are several game modes: creative, survival and hardcore survival to cater to different play styles, servers can be set to run in either of these modes and there are loads of them out there (join us on the GF server :] ). Roleplay also seems to be pretty popular with the MC community and actually works well with the game, most RP servers have economy mods and such installed to give the game more of an mmo feel.

The crafting system is surprisingly deep, there are lots of materials, an extensive modding community, an infinite world to play around in, there are various realms and underground caves, mineshafts and strongholds to explore if adventure is your thing (there are also loads of user created adventure maps available, some of them are really well done). Redstone wiring and pistons also add another layer of depth to the game, the things people have created with it are just insane.

Really, there are so many different ways to enjoy this game that you'd just have to buy it and see for yourself.

Interesting and thanks to you three.

I've tried, as you both said, to join in on the GF MC and every time I do, it just says that it's not able to connect and gives me some bizarre downed server error.

Are you using both the IP and port to connect?

Any other method fails for pretty much everyone.

I'll try this later tonight, after classes. D;

I think you need to be on some list or something to be able to join in minecraft, you should ask muffin about it.

Yeah, as pacemaker said you'll need to be added to the whitelist. I think Linux is in charge of that, that's who added me anyway.

No, not right now - I can't play Minecraft right now because there's some issues with it on my computer. So I am definitely not the person to contact right now :( I normally would be playing, but I need to fix my computer first.

Linux (and the other mods) has the power to add people to the whitelist.

Not being whitelisted typically displays the, "you're not whitelisted on this server" message, so what he was experiencing was a connection issue.

But yeah, if you haven't, talk to Linux to get whitelisted, and then try to connect using both the IP and port.

I don't even know where to go to start, lol. Is this just browser run? Are you using Steam, like CS:S IPs? What?

Tons of stuff here: Minecraft (http://www.minecraft.net/community)

And I'm the only one access to the whitelist, you'll just have to let me know your in game name.

The old mod Wicked used to use that gave dili and muffin access doesn't work (or I can't find the right version that works with our version), as soon as I figure that out, will give others access to whitelist, ban, kick, blow up, etc.

I don't need to be on the whitelist. I don't know what that is, but I don't need some special privileges. ;] Thanks, though.

And I'll look into that site. :3

Only the first part was meant for you, the rest is for everyone else talking about the whitelist, just didn't feel like properly formatting and pointing to.

And you do need to be on the whitelist if you want to play on our server. A whitelist is a list that lists people who are white. Or as they say in clubs and firewalls, people/connections who are allowed to come in/connect.
