New York City plans to enact a far-reaching ban on the sale of large sodas and other sugary drinks at restaurants, movie theaters and street carts, in the most ambitious effort yet by the Bloomberg administration to combat rising obesity.
The proposed ban would affect virtually the entire menu of popular sugary drinks found in delis, fast-food franchises and even sports arenas, from energy drinks to pre-sweetened iced teas. The sale of any cup or bottle of sweetened drink larger than 16 fluid ounces — about the size of a medium coffee, and smaller than a common soda bottle — would be prohibited under the first-in-the-nation plan, which could take effect as soon as next March.

Waste of time, people will just buy multiples now to get what ounce they were drinking.

It's a good idea, but a flawed one at that. I suppose it would cost more for multiple drinks though, as opposed to one large drink.
It's just a bit weird, ya know?
People can drink sodas at a controlled rate, it isn't like people are going on soda rages and putting themselves in food comas.
It is as simple as if you have a health problem, don't drink them.

Not all people think like that though. People will just keep drinking, keep eating, without giving their own health a second thought. If there are laws like this one that have a small chance of putting people off from drinking copious amounts of stomach-rot, then I'm all for it.
At the end of the day, if people started caring about their bodies instead of drinking and eating mass amounts of rubbish, then there'd be more hospital beds and less hospital queues for people who have other serious health problems, that aren't self-inflicted, like the aforementioned is.
I guess that's true, but banning them isn't a solution, because without soda, all that's left is alcohol and water, and maybe some other healthy crap.
I drink maybe 6 a week. And, let's say this does pass and I live in new york, I don't drink alcohol, and water is okay by me, gets boring eventually though, so why ruin something for people who aren't abusing sodas.

Don't think there are any stores that sell sodas more than 16oz around my work or home. The 24oz bottles have been declining over the past few months from what I've been seeing. The prices don't seem to have changed though, that's probably the only downside (or maybe I'm the only one seeing that).
I've been trying to cut down on my sody-pop consumption and haven't had any in about 2 weeks.
They should do something to regulate High fructose corn syrup, that crap is everywhere and that is the most fattening part of most foods.

The problem with the corn syrup is its really cheap and easy to make, so companies and your wallets want it, and the corn production companies are in bed with the government so you probably wont see any bans.

There is tons and tons of flavored waters, juices and stuff you can put in your water like mio and crystal light that are 0 or low in calories
I purchase mio aswell, it's just not the same, I can live without, but sodas are the least of the issue. Ban pizza then, and then maybe cake, and after that let's ban sugar in general.

Random thought on pop and junk food. You shouldn't be allowed to get those on food stamps. If you are going to use the tax payers money you should have a black list of super bad food or the very only allowed a very minimum of bad foods

They should regulate what you get to healthy foods

I saw this last night, personally not that worried about it, I hardly ever buy pop anymore.
The thing with healthy foods is that they're so much more expensive. Anything healthy is almost always at least a dollar more. For example I went to get groceries with my parents last weekend. And we were going to get a pound of ground beef. The regular stuff was like 3,00 dollars and the lean ground beef was almost 5 dollars. Really no difference except has less fat in it. Everything is like that, wheat bread is always more than white. kinda dumb, and people wonder why we get the unhealthy food.
Fast food is the devil!
I say I want to get fit and eat healthy, but who could resist delicious saturated fat, mmmm :P

You'll still be able to buy sodas, just not a large amount. So, if you only drink 6 sodas a week, then it's not ruining anything for you, because you drink an average amount.

Maybe if the average American didn't have a weight problem this wouldn't happen,

I think the fact that there is super size drinks and food caused the weight problem in the first place. Along with lazy people lol.

I was quick to rant, and didn't notice the title, the 16 oz part.
It is still kinda dumb, just not as stupid as I though, <.>

True that! It's the same over here in the UK though. You can add stuff to a meal deal from a fast food place, but I'm thinking, "isn't this **** already bad enough!?"

It won't make a real difference. An obese person may lose 5-10lbs with limited access to soda, but they'll still be obese.
