View Full Version : Getting into RPG games...
I want to get into RPG games more, but I'm not sure what games to try.
Can someone give some of their favorite RPG games (or just good ones in general)
I really like Borderlands and I plan on buying the second one, I've also played fallout 3 and I've beaten Fable 3.

If you enjoy Fallout, you'll like the Elder Scrolls series. My personal favorite RPG of all time is Star Wars KOTOR on the old Xbox. Definitely give it a try if you come across it.

Any game by Bethesda is a hit, I've enjoyed every game that I've played created by them. You could always try the expansion to fall out 3, Fall Out New Vegas. If you like knights, or medieval age, then Oblivion or Skyrim will be a great experience. Rage, an underrated game IMO. It's only about 20 dollars, it's a FPS RPG, those happen to be my favorite, Bioshock is kind of a FPS RPG, but a lot less freedom then games like Rage. Uhh, if you like turn based, Final Fantasy is okay... Some people like it, some people hate it. If you like turn based and want an amazing story I recommend Last Remnant. The turn base is a lot different from others, has a strategic value to it, but the story is what made the game by far. I was always looking forward to the cut scenes.
A game I'm thinking about getting is Dragon's Dogma. It's an open world RPG, kind of like the elder scrolls series. I've heard a lot of good things about, just need to find money to get it.
There are a lot of RPG games out there, you just need to find the style you enjoy.
If you like FPSs I suggest STALKER.
Really cool series.

You can also get KOTOR on Steam for dirt-cheap! As HR said, definitely give it a try.

Final Fantasy 7-8 (FF7 is imo the best RPG ever.)
Elder Scrolls series; Morrowind, Oblivion, Skyrim. (Morrowind is my favourite among these.)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R (RPG'ish FPS. I've just started playing this, but I'm liking it already.)
BioShock 1-2 (I enjoyed the second one the most.)
Mass Effect Trilogy (All three of them are awesome games.)
Diablo Trilogy (If you are more into fast paced RPGS.)

Witcher 2 assassins of kings is one of the best rpg games I have played this year.
Dragon age origins (I loved it)
Kotor serie, its getting a bit old but it is still one of the best RPGs out there.

You can try Skyrim, or some oldies like Baldur's Gate or Icewind Dale. Neverwinter Nights is pretty good too.

Baldurs gate is probably the best RPG in my opinion. Try that or planescape: torment. If you're looking into elder scrolls I think Morrowind is probably the best one. The witcher 2 is great and out of all the final fantasies I would try 7 or 8. And Like trunks said all games by Bethesda are pretty awesome.

As Trunks said, anything by Bethesda is great. Bioware make some fantastic RPGs as well: Baldur's Gate (both I & II are being remastered and released this summer), Dragon Age, Mass Effect, KotOR.
My personal favorite is Final Fantasy X, which is actually being remade/remastered in HD for PS3 (woot!); If you were looking to get into FF games, this would be the best starting point. Also, if graphics aren't a top priority, Chrono Trigger, Golden Sun, and Final Fantasy IX are must plays.

If you get through the easier games and you want a challenge, look to the Atlus games.
Demon's Souls and it's sequel Dark Souls are incredibly challenging but extremely addicting and fun games
If you want more turn-based games, the Shin Megami Tensei games are all great. Persona 3 comes highly recommended by me.

Dark Souls in impossible lol, I played on my friends game a couple times, easily one of the hardest games I've ever played. He even cheated and is at level 1,200 or something and he still dies all the time.

You have to be careful playing the game no matter what level. If you just rush in and hack n slash everything, you're going to die. You have to play defensively.
Demon's Souls isn't quite as hard, but after I beat the game a first time, I made a brand new character and still destroyed the game. It's more about strategy than it is level (though, level is very important as well)

I've never played Demon's Souls or Dark Souls, but they sound kind of intriguing. I'm always up for a challenge.

Just don't start from the middle of some series. Play the old ones.
I would recommend Dragon Age: Origins from the new RPGs

some games it doesn't matter, like the persona series, the games are unrelated. Same with the main Final Fantasy series. obviously, the sequels are related (like XIII-2, X-2, VII: Dirge of Cerberus, etc)

Planescape: Torment is one of my all time favorite RPG's. It's older (1999), which mean it comes from a time where games still took skill and thought and it's a *very* long game. Also, the game has so many different endings, story lines, party member options and dialogue choices, depending on what stats/alignment you chose you chose.

A real good game thats not exactly an rpg, but is open world and what you do can effect it in some ways. Deadly premonition. The graphics are kind of poor for the year it was released (2010) but its a great game. And being a horror survival with an open world and diverse characters, well its a very interesting play. ^^
