U.S. government debt reached $16 trillion for the first time after rising $1 trillion since November, according to Treasury Department data.

The debt rose to $16.02 trillion on Aug. 31 as Republicans and Democrats debate ways to trim the budget deficit. The parties will have to negotiate on raising the $16.4 trillion federal debt ceiling. Treasury officials have said the U.S. will reach the limit in the fourth quarter of this year and can take measures so that Congress doesn’t have to raise it until 2013.

U.S. government debt reached $14 trillion in December 2010 and $13 trillion in June 2010. Ten years ago today the debt was $6.2 trillion.

wow, this is rediculous

If we can get rid of bush tax cuts, get out of war and make some changes to budget we'd be far better off.

If each dollar was a mile in space, we'd be 2.8 light years in some direction, or more than half way to Proxima Centauri.

Almost there! Let's keep going! 1.4 light years to go.

Wait.... Clinton had us at a money advantage.... Bush put us in war which equaled billions in debt. Sounds like a presidents fault to me :P

Well, the president runs the country... and makes decision on what our money goes to... so yea, that makes sense ;)

Actually I don't think we can really blame Clinton for anything big. And the president does not solely decide where the money goes. Blame the legislators

I really don't know enough about this to argue though lol That was my 2 cents :P

I agree. Know what i liked about Clinton? When he was president this UE BS wasn't like it is now.... was rare to be on UE for more than 6 months... AND they fkn checked up on you. Nowadays, they don't give a crap if you're on UE for 2+ years and they also don't give a crap if you're looking for a job. They don;t even check... just issue you checks -__-

Didnt Clinton open up some avenues that help create the housing bubble? Either way we got a lot of work to do and the dems and gop need to stop fighting each other the sake of fighting and working to save our country

If we don't distract the people with Democrat vs Republican drama they may actually start looking at the issues. We can't have that

That's one thing I always hated about politics, everyone is so concerned about if they're republican or democrat. If they would stop being idiots and put their ideas together, we could actually solve some issues.
