Well, i've been having problems with my computer lately. Last night, it got really really slow and then just completely shut off. Ever since then, it's been shutting off at random times. However, some things I noticed:

-it runs dead silent
-it is always really hot when it turns off
-if i turn it back on right away, it shuts off within a few minutes.

I'm assuming that there's something wrong with the fan, so the laptop is just overheating. What do you guys suggest?

Your guess is right, fan is dead. If it's not whirring at that means it's definitely overheating. It's also the reason why it turns off within a few minutes of turning it back on.

First solution is to change the fan. Most likely, they aren't as cheap as desktop fans because you'll have to find a specific type and shape of a fan. And also you'll have to figure out whether the CPU has its own fan and if that's what's shut off. My laptop has 2 fans, one big case one and one for the CPU.

Second solution is for you to look into laptop coolers. They're basically platforms you sit your laptop on and they blow the heat away. But I'm not sure how much it would help. Coolermaster makes very good ones (just a suggestion).

I can comfirm linux suggestion with a cooling pad. I have one and it works great. get a USB powered one, they cost less in the long run because you dont have to buy batteries.

Well, i set it on top of my air conditioner and that worked really well...right now i have the laptop elevated in the corners with a few ice packs underneath it (hoping that will cool it)

Give me a ballpark estimate on how much a new fan might be? Or should I just ghetto the cooling until I can get a new computer (which i'm planning on doing anyways)

Here are a few:

Cooler master - $20 after MIR: Newegg.com - Cooler Master Notepal U2 Laptop (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997730)

Cooler master $15: Newegg.com - Cooler Master NotePal X-Lite Silent Laptop (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997819)

Cooler master - $25 after MIR: Newegg.com - Cooler Master Notepal U3 Laptop (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834997872)

Thermaltake - $33: Newegg.com - Thermaltake Massive23 ST 23cm fan Notebook Cooler Model CLN0009 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834991042)

Antec $25: Newegg.com - Antec Notebook Cooling System Model NOTEBOOKCOOLER (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834999850)

Not too expensive, but also not dirt cheap. The prices vary based on the number of fans and/or size of fans, as well as size of laptop it supports.

When you do fix it I would suggest downloading Speccy (http://www.piriform.com/speccy). It's free and will tell you your processor temperature so you can make sure the fix is working.

Same thing happened to my laptop, only it was my video card fan. Didn't feel like paying to replace the whole thing (that and getting to it was a beeeech) so I just started using a cooler and it works like a champ. Some big games like WoW get laggy, but overall it still works just fine. I'd recommend just doing that if you already plan on getting a new computer anyways.

ah, well I expected them to be in the $20 area, so that's not bad. I'll probably get one of those. Until then, i'm gonna find my old window fan, set my computer on top of it, and see if that works haha.

I have a program called SpeedFan that tells the temperature.

I fixed the fan problem, but now in order to turn the computer on, I have to take the keyboard off and re-connect the power button to the motherboard, and push the button. This computer is so ghetto now lol

Fantastic. I used to have a laptop that had the power plug electrical taped in place because it had broken from the case. Not nearly as spiffy as your rig.

Might I ask, why do you have to remove the keyboard to press the power button? There must be an easier way.
