View Full Version : WiFI is Slow

For some reason my WiFi is running really slow, but if my device is plugged in via Ethernet cord, then it runs perfect. I noticed my Phone running slow recently, thought it was just acting up. But yesterday a friend came over to play League of Legends, he was using my WiFi and I was plugged into the router with a cord. He had a ping over 900 and I was running at 50. So for some reason only wireless devices are running slow, my moms tablet has been running slow as well as my phone.
Any ideas what it could be? The router is a few years old, 4 or 5 maybe hard to say. The signal is strong, all bars, and besides the router is in my room, so that shouldn't be the issue.
I've tried resetting it and that didn't fix it, so I'm running out of ideas other than maybe it's just going bad. It doesn't do it all the time, but it acts up and will do it anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour.
Any ideas?

Might just be the router crapping out. It happened to me a couple years ago, so I went out and bought a new one then the problem was gone. Not sure what the actual cause of it, or what it's actually doing though.

Im thinking it's crapping out as well. Do you know anyone that has an extra you could borrow to test it out?
Or buy one from BB or something, and test it out. If that's not the issue, at least you could return it.

I'll probably just end up getting a new one, it is a few years old and I tried so many different things in admin panel. Not many more options, at least nothing I can think of.

A little while back mine was behaving similarly. I ended up needing to update the firmware on my router and that ended up fixing the problem.

I tried looking for Firmware the other day. Doesn't seem that it has any upgrades.
If you'd like to try and find some the model is an Encore ENHWI-N2

My old linksys router did that once in a while. I did a lot to try to fix it but the router was just getting old. I changed to a Belkin which was great at first, but now it keeps dropping the wifi connection once a week and I have to reboot. Trying to get the piece of crap replaced now.
Never used an Encore though, used linksys/cisco hardware most of my life and this belkin makes me regret trying to move on.

I've had really good experiences with D-Links so far. Belkin and Netgear have been terrible for me and Linksys, ever since Cisco put their hands on them, have also been garbage in my opinion. D-links are so far the only ones I've never had any real problems with.
Currently have a WRT-1400, Don't quote me on number but it's close to that model, which has been active and in use without problems since 2006 or 2007 at my parents place and then I use a DGL-4500 which has been active since 2009. Mine did need a firmware update about a year ago but other than has worked great.
*EDIT*
I found a review or two no your router where people said they flashed it with DD-WRT firmware. Didn't find any documentation on that though.

Thanks for the find Ziek, I'll give it a shot when I get back home. It doesn't look like a simple install, I actually can't even find where to download it yet. I'll have to look more into it when I'm not in a rush.
