vB isn't that good do i think, IPB is messy, so my heart is still at phpBB and Quezza(another full modded phpBB releases :p)
it's alot like vB just that it's free and it's better than the barebone phpBB :)

and btw:
SMF -> sux, bad look(looks old and crappy), not so good thread handeling(look in the source, 2-3 tweaks and it's alot better)
YaBB -> sux even more, uses WAAAAY to manny resources, bad looks, and bad thread handeling
fusetalk -> sux, expensive(ehm, 600andsomething$ for standard? wtf, get real it's not that good.), no support for the most used web language(php)(only .net and cfm)

lol so this forum sux (not sux meaning the forum, the look)? lol, how to make better then? u know i wanted to convert to phpbb in the first place, but the converters just screws up, i had to go with what i had lol

My favourites forum softwares are vbulletin and phpbb

I suggest trying out phpBB. phpBB 3 is by far the best forum software I’ve ever used, it’s open-source so it’s free to download and use. It’s simple and doesn’t include all the “unneccessary” features you speak off. It’s minimal. Vanilla doesn’t even come close to competing with phpBB, so yeah - give it a try.
