athlon can't compare to phenom right now - phenom is the quad core processor so whether you want to use that for gaming or for school work, you can actually do both there at the same time.

if you have 8 gigs of ram, make sure your operating system can take it, because i believe 32 bit windows xp can't read more than 3.5 gigs of memory.

and if you want a good graphics card, get the new GeForce 9600GT instead of the 8600GTs, it's newer and the graphics are awesome

im not sure if the 64 bit vista is too good, i mean the 32 bit is still bad, so bad people are still criticizing it for not being free lol

but at the end it is up to you - question though, why are you going to run Two graphics cards? 1 should be good enough for any game right now, unless you are going to run them on 3-4 different monitors

im not planning on upgrading for a while because we r try for another baby so it will be buy what will do now and for a couple of years on top of that, plus its not much more to by two at the same time, and in not sure as vista 32bit is crap but to run 4gb or more in ram you need vista 64bit. although will not be buying for a few months so the new microsoft package might be out soon after that and i may wait for it, although that will probabley be crap too lol

i don't see the point of buying to GPUs for 1 computer since the GeForce 9600GT is so awesome right now lol, it can handle any game out there and and probably will be for months, i know some places will give you like a $5 discount if you buy two but that's not much, i would rather save the $180 or so and wait for a new GPU to come out

and i didn't say vista 32 bit is crap, i meant vista in general lol :-P i built myself a new computer less than a month ago and i went with XP Pro, still beats vista by a mile imo

How much does GeForce 9600GT cost? just wondering as if it's awesome as you say I think that'd be a good start on what I include in my new PC.

its around $179 - $199 depending on maker

its pretty cheap compared to the GeForce 8800 which can go over $200 and $250 for no reason lol

here is a good one by XFX - its $149.99 after rebate so it's a pretty good deal - i bought my GeForce 8600GT for $110, i was short on cash and i wouldn't have been able to get the 9600GT for another month and that would mean another month wait for my new pc

ok get ur point, i guess i can buy one now and always buy another later when they r cheaper if i buy to at once the second will cost about 80 pound. not building my own computer would not no were to start so im thinking of getting one from pc specialistson the net i thinking 950+vat is not bad for
AMD PHENOM™ X4 9600
8GB CORSAIR XMS2 800MHz
ASUS® CROSSHAIR: DUAL LAN
512MB GEFORCE 9600GT
with 2 had drives 150gb raptor and 500gb standand and all the bits in between although i never brought such a powerfull machine

oh i assumed you were building your own lol

but again im not trying to convince you of buying just one GPU i was just saying how it won't affect anything more with 2 cards like that.

btw, i recommend you get a good psu with all that - maybe a 700-1000 watt power source unit otherwise you will have trouble running all of that, especially if you do get 2 9700GTs.

thanks was not sure what power supplie to get i though it would be pretty big and i looked at building my own but by the time i brought the main components it would cost the same amount as having one built, least that way i cant c*ck thing up

wow really? if you are talking about main components such as CPU, Motherboard, and RAM then that would cost around $500-$600 total and the extra stuff would make this go over $1000 which is still pretty cheap for the power your computer is getting

the PC i built has a little less power because I have half the memory and use an amd athlon CPU instead of a phenom and it cost me just about a $100 (all the parts + a new monitor) and also i use the GeForce 8600 GT

but at the end if you get what you wanted, you can't really complain much lol

good luck!
