The biggest trouble Frontlines: Fuel of war is going to encounter will be comparisons to Call of Duty 4. And sure enough, it doesn't quite offer the same visual and dramatic feast as Infinity Ward's blockbuster.

But it isn't really fair to put them side by sidebecause the 2 games have such different approaches to combat. While Call of Duty drops you into focused, intense skirmishes, brilliantly stage managing tightly controlled missions, Frontlines, as the name suggests, has you right at the edge of the action, attempting to turn the tide of a huge confrontation accross a collossal battlefield. Much like, unsuprisingly, the Battlefield series (on which several members of developers Kaos Studios previously worked).

Again like Battlefield, your soldier can fight on foot, take control of jeeps, tanks, helicopters, and more and use them in whichever way you see fit in order to secure control points across a massive map. Crucially how you attempt to accquire each control point dictates both how your troops and the enemy behave.

Pick an obscure root sneaking across rooftops, picking off individual soldiers and not only will your troops be equally subtle, the enemy will start employing their own snipers. Choose a blunter approach (such as a wave of tanks) and a chaotic firefight will break out as missiles fly past and the artillery rumbles out.

Frontlines is a games that feels like an online battle even if your playing on your own. It's been created purely for the purpose of epic, struggle-for-territory combat rather than recreating the realisim of war. It may not besophisticated but it does offer carnage on a satisfyingly huge scale.

The good:

- The weapons and vehicles are fun to use
-The different approaches to combat situations
-The size of online battles

The bad:

-That the vehicle controls are a bit fiddly
-Many of the levels are desert based

Graphics:

The desert enviroments are great for online games but they look a bit samey

Gameplay:

Fun, intense pockets of combat across various large maps, great stuff.

Lifespan:

Solo mode will be over in a weekend but this is primarily an online experience.

Overall;

By no means original but it does offer satisfying combat with intense online battles
