What is the reason for games being so short this gen?

What is the reason?
Not enough time?
Not enough space on DVD?
Lazy developers?

Anyone know why?

Well, maybe for games like Assassin's Creed which only had 9 people to assassinate, they don't want the game to get boring and repetitive by making it too long.

Yeah but they could have made it longer and differant, like having events in the city, hangings, people robbing a place. If you had to live in the assasins creed city's then life would get so boring. Was there even a day to night system in the game?

I think games are shorter now because so much time is spent on the graphics and how people look, that it doesnt give them enough time to work on the story.

Well I think he means stuff like CoD4 or Heavenly Sword. But I think they focus more on graphics and gameplay than they do on storyline. I'd rather have good story than good graphics, hence why i still buy ps1 and ps2 games.

Some games take time, while others don't. It's like they said, they don't want the game to get boring. You just seem to pick the wrong games.

Although true to a certain extent, it still doesn't explain 5 hour campains like COD4. Plus they could always put it on more than 1 disc if it's a capacity problem. But I think that you are right in the fact that it takes a lot more development time to get a really great looking HD game, and thus they dont spend as much time on length. In the end, everyone has deadlines, and the graphics are expected to be top notch, so if either of those criteria aren't met the development team will be looking for a new job.

Play Cod and Gears on higher difficulties if you want a longer game.

I think EA's Army of two is just a case of lazy developer/publisher pick one. Single player was short and the game only shipped with 3 multiplayer maps. Go figure.

I was just about to bring that up.
That game was definitely enjoyable.. so I think it was laziness on their part.
It definitely should have been longer.

What do they achieve by being lazy?
Disgruntled customers, that's what.
lol.

nah they always get customers buying there games and ending up with them making money, look at NFS: pro street. That was like the worst need for speed game ever but people still bought it cos they thought it was going to be just as good as the other nfs games. It was like in the top 10 for the "100 most bought games of 2008"

I think game devs have focused more on how a game looks than how it plays, or the story line or anything else. And its a damn shame too. While yes, as an owner of a next-gen system, I do want my games to have a next-gen look, I do NOT want to sacrifice game play for it. I dont want to drop 50-60 bucks on a game that looks GORGEOUS, and can be beaten in 10 hours. SCREW THAT!! Bring back the 40+hour games.

Multiplayer has killed the great singleplayer campaign. Period.
