"CAMAS, Wash. -- A big bird took a lot of drivers by surprise on a local highway Tuesday.

Someone called 911 to report "an ostrich running along SR-500 pecking at cars and chasing them" on Tuesday.

It wasn't actually an ostrich but an emu, which was chasing cars and scaring some drivers.

A family in Camas said it is used to odd happenings around their home since they have dogs, goats, rabbits and used to have pigs and llamas.

But they said they never thought police would have to use such serious force to subdue their emu.

Police are calling the escaped emu Big Bird, but Daniel Garrison's family said it just calls him Emu.

The bird jumped his fence and escaped on Saturday and Garrison called animal control to let them know.

Emus can be fairly aggressive so he was concerned.

Finally on Tuesday, people started calling 911, reporting that a large bird was slowing down traffic near a Camas church and pecking at cars.

Garrison and police showed up to get the bird back home, but, not surprisingly, Emu is hard to catch.

Police decided to use non-lethal force to capture the bird.

"They said, 'Well let's try not to shoot him.' So they Tased him, we hog-tied him and brought him back over here. … A typical day in the life of Daniel," Garrison said.

He said he thinks the emu escaped because they sold two other emus and three llamas recently, so they think he was lonely.

Garrison said the emu can run up to 45 mph."
