Me and my friends were debating the other day about how if I goto Gamestop and Buy a Used game, isn't that JUST as bad as Pirating it? the Developers don't get the money the Gamestop where I purchased the Used game does. And if I rent it from Gamefly, Gamefly probably gets a discount on multiple copies of the game and probably rents each copy more then once so wouldn't renting a Game be almost as bad as Pirating it? If I buy a game generally I get it the day it comes out insuring the money goes to the people who made the game. But I know tons of people that just buy Used games which are $5-$10 cheaper and work fine and all that money goes to Gamestop or wherever you get it. or they don't buy at all they just Rent, beat it, and send it back. Unless I'm missing something that's pretty much the same as Downloading a Game from a Torrent. but none of the developers complain about that, I must be missing something or is the developers just turning the other way because Gamestop and others bring all their sales?

I don't really see it as a debate at all. Buying a used game keeps the game going. I can't even explain myself but you know where I am coming from?
Downloading a PC game from a torrent is WAY different then purchasing from a store.
You are still supporting the gaming community and your love for games.
Overtime the game gains value and becomes higher in value.
earthbound for SNES goes for 90$ nowadays. It is RARE.thats way off topic though I am an idiot.

buying a use game just as bad as piracy? no..why? piracy deals with duplicating and distributing - selling your used game to the store so someone else can play isn't bad, not even close - there is still just one copy and the manufacturer already got compensation for that ONE copy - if someone buys a new copy then they get compensation for that

but if someone buys a game, makes 10 copies and sells those - its like 10 people playing the game for the price of one - at the same time, whereas in used games, only one person may enjoy the game at a time

if it was just as bad, trust me, they would have outlawed it a LONG time ago and even made it illegal to borrow a game from someone lol - and places like Gamefly and other places that rent games wouldn't exist

Who's to say only one person buys that game after the first person. It is the same, maybe just not as fast so Game companies don't really care.

Pirating or downloading a game is illegal. Buying a game is not.

but what your saying is that. Since the money doesn't go to the developers it is like getting it free....?!?

No.

Pirating games is worse. The reason is if you buy a game you play it you sell it they play it they sell it on. That is what the company wants is people to play there game. And it would get there game better ratings etc.

Now if you get a Torrent then you have a chance of going to jail if you don't do it right and get a stamp of fail for your life.

On another note if you are not a somewhat good hacker and can get the games with out having a chance to get caught that is another story but a bad one.

But main line If you don't have the money you don't need it

What I'm saying is merely that why do they allow People like Gamestop to sell Used games when they make no money what so ever off used games. just like when their game is pirated. isn't that the point Pirating is illegal because the developers aren't getting paid for their work?

When it's alright just because you payed money in general, even if it doesn't goto the people who put hours upon hours of work into the game.
So pretty much Gamestop pays $60 and basically has the right to "Pirate" off the game.

Then again that's probably how Gamestop makes a profit and is able to stay open and supply us with the games in the first place.

Note: I have nothing against Gamestop or used games it's just a random thought I wanted opinions on, plus I thought it would be an interesting Subject.

Dude Your not getting It!

If you buy from the company they get payed and then it is Ok to re-sell it. If You download it illegally then no one gets payed. Not the company or the re-seller

If a game is re-sold then that means that the company got payed. But if it is illegally downloaded they are not!

I don't see how you can't see that
