What makes a computer game popular

I have a school project to do about popular games, and i would need to know what makes games like Need for Speed, Call of Duty, The sims 3 popular. :spinny:

old, all the old games are the best because their classics but i play both

Usually if its something I want to play or not. Games these days I feel like aren't as good as older games. Back in the PS1 days I could enjoy just about anything, that's not the case anymore

I'd actually say controls and gameplay. In computer games I don't really care about story, I like to play RTS games and Sim games (like rollercoaster tycoon) on the computer. In general though, if a game controls well and in a unique way, I'll enjoy it. I hate how these days every game either has 1 of 3 control/camera styles. It'll either be a FPS game, a TPS game, or a third person view that you have full control of the camera. There's no games that have a unique control or camera style anymore. I mean, I guess it makes sense because in the old days they had to make do with the technology and nowadays they can basically do whatever, but it makes for less fun games IMO

I guess I already answered this but old games since the graphics weren't that important they were able to concentrate on making a unique experience. Lots of good things came out of the limitations of the systems. The fog in Silent Hill was added because the PS1 didn't have much draw distance, for example. These days games basically take either a FPS, TPS, or GoW3-styled control/gameplay and add their own gimmicks to make the game "unique" This isn't a very good explanation of how I feel, but I just felt back in the day games were simple and enjoyable, now they're getting more complex and graphics/online are becoming the focus over an enjoyable single player

I can't explain why these are my favorites, they just are. They're the ones i enjoyed the most playing.

-RPG, RTS, Action/Adventure

* What is the first thing that you notice by playing a new game?

-How it feels. How the character moves, the feel of the entire thing.

* What is the most important thing in computer games? (story, Graphics...?)

-What I described in the previous question is pretty important to me. If the actual gameplay isn't ... playable, then it's worthless. Story is also very important. It doesn't necessarily have to be the greatest story (though it is fantastic when it is), but it needs to at least make sense and be compelling enough to continue.

* How often do you play video games? How many hours?

-Pretty often. Not sure how many hours. Maybe 2-3 a day, but it really depends. Maybe 2-3 hours every couple days. It changes a lot.

* Do you perfer new or old games? Why?

-I don't have a preference. I just want it to be GOOD. I feel like a lot of games nowadays are more about flashy graphics and stuff than about the actual gameplay or story, and that is very frustrating. I will play anything if it's worthwhile to play, even if there are elements that are lacking. In short, I like both.

* Favorite game/s? Why?

-Chrono Cross. Totally engaging, fantastic replay value, GORGEOUS soundtrack, beautiful graphics (and for PS1!!).... It is the most wonderful, perfect game I have played.

Other favorites: many of the Final Fantasy series (FFV, FFVI, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX), the Ratchet and Clank Series.

* Favorite developer? Why?

-Probably Insomniac because of the Ratchet and Clank series. They seem to have so much fun and really care about what they are making. Then I guess maybe Square... Nippon Ichi.

* Are you addicted to computer games?

-No. :P But they're fun :3
