I love the Bio-shock series! I am patiently awaiting the arrival of the newest one. It seems like it is taking forever also!
But check out Bio-shock 1 and 2 if you haven't already!

If you like zombies, the Left 4 Dead series is good, along with Killing Floor. If you like War, then I recommend a game from the Battlefield Series (e.g. Bad Company 2 or the upcoming BF3).

This depends on what you're looking for, but heres a few suggestions:

Run-and-Gun: MW2 or Black Ops. These are ones where its more about K/D than winning, so just find an overpowered combo and exploit it.

Strategic Gameplay: Medal of Honor. This game requires strategy to win because of the diverse maps. Since it was made by DICE, its not easy to get kills when you first start, but once you level up in a class, you get upgrades that help immensely. After you get use to the maps and learn the surroundings it gets easier as well.

Team Play: Battlefield Bad Company 2. This was also made by DICE, so starting off is rough. Here you level up in a class to get attachments, but unlike MoH, you also level up your overall level, such as being level 1,2,3, etc. etc. You'll be unable to play for a long time due to less than stellar graphic quality and without a team of friends it just begins to become a drag after 4 games or so.

These are just games that i personally own and have played to an extent, so there may be others out there that are 10x better. Hopefully this helped a little

If you're an RPG fan as well, I recommend Fallout. Good storyline, freeroam, and a cool way to kill things called V.A.T.S.(Vault-tec Assisted Targeting System) that allows you to target specific body parts. It's fun to play around with!

I definitely recommend a game from the Halo series, probably go with Halo 3 or Halo Reach. Though ODST isn't that bad.

If you're bored and want a retro game, Goldeneye on the N64, awesome!

I see a lot of people throwing out big named titles but only a few people actually giving you the correct answer which is.. what kind of FPS?

There is so many but since you said "first-person" that can easily eliminate a good chunk of shooters out there that are third person and over the shoulder games.

To be honest Linux and a few others have correctly given you a lot of great titles depending on what FPS sub-genre your looking to play.

For me though, I would say DOOM3. It's pretty much as basic a shooter as you can get and it does this old-school style very nicely. It's not only a hell of a good time, it's immersible and a pretty decently long game. It's also still a sexy looking game and only about twenty American dollars on steam now for the game and it's expansion.

Hope you find what your looking for mate.

Left for dead was a good game, but not the best FPS in my opinion. There are a bunch of other good games that top Left for Dead 1.

    this made me lol.

I share the same nostalgia for the game. I think one of the things that really set it apart from most FPS games is that an enemy will react to where you shot them. Hands, legs feet ect. Games with that added touch and pretty few and far between.

But since the original poster is just looking for a really good FPS, perhaps they should specify their preferences so that we can narrow down the list. Do graphics mater? Do you want a fps for the multiplayer or single player experience? Your friends on the forum probably have an idea of what systems you own but I do not. =/

I cant remember the last time I get really hooked on a good fps. Not since the original Modern Warfare.

As the other members have suggested, BF3 and even BFBC are two of my favourite first person shooter games ever. Although, I'm not a big fan of the MoW series, I would recommend them to others as most of my friends are big fans of the franchise.

I want to take the time to point out how very sad this thread has made me. Clearly no one has put clear thought into their responses in the lifetime of this thread. And its relativly old at that considering it was posted before dead island came out.

First I want to point out the misleading title: "Best FPS". What was really requested was popular FPS games and poorly at that, in order for anyone to really point you in a good direction we would have to know what you are gaming on.

Also we cant forgive the erroneous use of terms. Shooters and FPS's are not the same thing. Suggesting Dead Space is ok in a shooter thread (or specifically 3rd person horror) and bioshock is ok in the first person shooter as an RPG/FPS.

Now, if we are looking for an opinion poll on what is worth playing almost any entry is acceptable. But since this thread specifically asks for the best FPS I expected a little more consideration for the classics. If I was to assemble a list of the most influential FPS games of all time vs a list of the most successful we would see drastic differences in titles.
Anyways my list of the Best FPS's (aka gun wielding action games) I would have to do something like this:

Im also listing games that are directly related, aka would not exist without:

unreal - 10 fps games ont he first engine including Duke Nukem, roughly 55 fps games on the 2nd engine, and unreal engine 3 currently runs some of the best games in the industry.
Halflife - CS, DOD, CSS, DODS, HLB, HL2, Portal1&2, L4D1&2
    Halo series
    Goldeneye - Perfect Dark
    Battlefield series
    COD series

Those are all the really landmark games I can think of at the moment, as far as shaping the FPS content that we see today goes. But as far as games I would absolutely recommend that are FPS games? without knowing your preferences or platforms thats rather hard.

After careful consideration I have decided that portal is the best FPS ever made and I am perfectly willing to defend that standpoint.

Gotta stick to my roots and say Call of Duty 1, even though I've been less-than impressed with their latest developments. It was a close one between that, and Battlefield 2.

Battlefield bad company 2, HALO 3, or any mainstream FPS games.
For some reason any other FPS game that isn't COD, Battlefield, or Halo just doesn't appeal to people...

    Hmm. Not sure if serious...

What about Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Counter Strike, Team Fortress 2, Portal(if you count them as FPS).. And that's just Valve. Bioshock, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Crysis, Goldeneye?

Change 'people' to 'Xbox Kids' and you've got a more accurate generalization :P

I'm pretty sure i've said it in this topic, but I'll bring it up again: Goldeneye is the best shooter ever. The only way it could have been better is if you had the ability to add computer opponents in multiplayer

Call of Duty 2 online = must fun I've had with an online FPS.
Close to Halo CE online and BF bad company 2.
Also Bioshock 2 is fun but I'm not sure if anybody plays online anymore.
(shame because that was a fun and creative multiplayer)
