Default Blackberry Curve outsells Iphone in qtr1

NPD Group: BlackBerry Curve outsold iPhone in 1Q
By RACHEL METZ – 25 minutes ago
NEW YORK (AP) — Research In Motion Ltd. is throwing Apple Inc. a curveball in the smart phone game: The BlackBerry Curve outsold Apple's iPhone in the first quarter, according to market researchers at The NPD Group.
For one stretch last year, Apple said it sold more iPhones than RIM, the longtime market leader, sold BlackBerrys.
But in the first three months of this year, the Curve benefited from its widespread availability, since it is sold by all four major U.S. wireless carriers, while the iPhone is available only through AT&T Inc. A buy-one-get-one-free promotion by Verizon Wireless also helped the Curve, NPD analyst Ross Rubin said.
The iPhone slipped to No. 2, while RIM's touch-screen BlackBerry Storm — also available through Verizon Wireless — came in third.
NPD did not release sales numbers along with the rankings, saying those expanded figures are only provided to clients.
Apple doesn't say how many iPhones it has sold, but the company said it shipped wireless carriers a total of 3.8 million iPhones during its fiscal second quarter, which ended March 28. RIM shipped 7.8 million BlackBerrys during its fiscal fourth quarter, which ended Feb. 28.
NPD estimated that RIM snagged almost 50 percent of the U.S. smart phone market in the first quarter, up 15 percent from the fourth quarter of 2008. It believes that Apple and Treo maker Palm Inc. both saw their share of the smart phone market drop 10 percent during that time.
RIM declined to comment. An Apple spokesman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

    that's surprising imo.

It's really not that crazy at all. If you didn't read, the Blackberry Curve is available on all networks and verizon even had a deal. So of course it beat the sale of the iPhone which is only available on the AT&T Network.

I don't know anyone in rl with an Iphone. The reason mostly being that all my friends have Alltel including my self. Then you have the rest with sprint and a few with AT&T

I wonder how much money Apple has made off of the iPhone regardless of sales. A buy oen get one free offer? Of course you are going to sell more! But you will not be having more profits from selling the phone alone. Buy one get one offer for $100.

7.8mill/2=3.9mill 3.9mill*$100=390mill iPhone for their cheapest is $200 ok lets say they are were sold for $200 3.8mill*$200=760mill.

Ok Blackberry obviously sold more phones but Apple had the higher profits. (I'm not including cost to produce or the rates of the phone company)

JakJak, do you just take the main headlines from Yahoo! News and post them here?
This is like the 9th topic I've read near-directly phrased from Yahoo! front page. Lol.

And I prefer the BlackBerry. That stupid touch screen "key lock" never works. My boss has the Instinct and it speed calls me all the time. Same with the iPhone. Just an expensive waste.

That's how you start a discussion, you post news about something.

And I agree, touch screens are terrible. Plus you always have to keep cleaning the screen off from touching it all the time. I'll never get a touch screen...
