Yea it is, there isn't a selected path. You can go freely from world to world as you like, finding new treasure with the new abilities earned. Platformers aren't all 2D. I guess AC isn't completely a platformer, the first was, just a crappy one.
I do agree with that, but the first from the latest is completely different. And you're right. Yet I still find AC to be an RPG.
